4. Oh, my dear MAHNY!
He is gorgeous!

But that beak is scary! I"m glad he's chewing on something, and not on your finger....

His colors are spectacular!

Thank you for kicking this.....I'd forgotten I was going to respond to you!

:scared:

although its that the sharpness as much as the pressure he uses that will really get you.

27. The pressure applied by those beaks is incredible.
I've looked at the head shape of hyacinth macaws and I'm pretty sure they have the best jaw musculature of any parrot. Look at the attachment areas for muscles and notice that the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) can move independently. The same is true for all parrots, but the skull of the hyacinth impresses me:

6. nice parrot!!
is there a difference between a parrot and a parakeet? and did i call this bird the wrong one? I like the texture of his/her wings, the designs on it and the way the top of the one i can see is red! animals with wings and sharp beaks tend to intimidate me, though. :scared:

7. it is a parrot
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 09:24 PM by MadAsHellNewYorker
you are correct sir...its a Double-Yellow Headed Amazon to be exact. There is a difference between a parrot and a parakeet. Parakeets are much smaller and don't have the vocalizations like a parrot does.

he has red shoulders, heh.

thanks for the baby love jonny :loveya:

:hi:

parrots need a lot of of attention, you always have to be aware of what they are doing outside of the cage cause they are super curious. They coulod easily bit through an electrical cord and get death-shock.

When I was his age I had a bird (not a parrot) but I didn't enjoy her becuase she made far to much noise and I didn't really know how to care for her. Also, parrots have really distinct personalities and may only like one person of the family at a time, and that might not be your son....

Im not trying to discourage you, becuase if you are willing to pick up the slack, it could work. good luck with your decision

My dad just put Pineapple (yes, that's her name; long story!) in her cage, as well. The downstairs of our house is pretty dark now, except for the lights I have on, so she'll shut up and stay quiet until tomorrow, most likely. *knocks on wood*

15. What a little cutie!!!!
What a wonderful bird!!! But then again, since I also have a double yellowheaded Amazon, I'm a bit prejudiced. :)

Baby appears to be left-footed, as are most Amazons. Did you know that? Most Amazon parrots use their left foot to manipulate objects. My Amazon is also left-footed.

Most African greys are right-footed. My little Senegal parrot--also from Africa--was right-footed, also.

LOL...they sure like things they can shred, don't they? It looks like he's got a good start on that wooden doughnut! :)

:hi:

I bet Gabby is just as cute at playtime :7 Yeah, Baby is left footed, though he uses his right sometimes. I had no idea that there were trends in bird footedness. Thats a very interesting fact to know...

Baby has been working on that doughnut for a while now, but after his photoshoot, he tore into it and now its gone! He can shred up a cardboard tube like nobodys business ;)

move away from the silly Amazon? It seems to me like you're very attached. :)

That last pic shows how the dark edging on the feathers crosshatches, creating a weird effect. This is especially noticeable on the neck. My cousin told me it reminds her of a shut-off TV screen.

The second pic is just hysterical. :)

Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 01:10 AM by MadAsHellNewYorker
he says "hello" "goodbye" "I love you" "Oh Baby" and a few other things...he likes to whistle: the marriage march, the "get your attention" whistle and the "hot" whistle (does that make any sense? I figured it would be the best i could do without trying to write them out phonetically). The problem is getting him to do them on comand
