A CatBoreal Update (not for the squeamish)
Because Mrs. Grumpy asked so nicely...

Incidently, if a discussion of female anatomy grosses you out, stop reading.

No, seriously, you don't want to read this.

Can't say I didn't warn you...

I had my amnio on Monday and let me tell you, it's an experience to never repeat. They had to stick me with a 20 gauge needle three times to get their measely 20 mL sample of amniotic fluid. Thank the Gods for Canadian Universal Health coverage, because if they hadn't have given me some freezing, I think I might be in jail for murder.

The first time, the OB misses my uterus entirely. Yes, he was working from the ultrasound, but it seems that my uterus is tilted back and to the right, something none of my doctors mentioned before now. The second time, he hits the fundus, or top of my uterus. The fundus is the thickest part of the uterine muscle, but because it's right over the best reservoir of amniotic fluid, he tries to push the needle in as far as it can go.

Ladies and gentlemen (if you've managed to read this long) I knew, in theory at least, that nerve impulses are electrical in nature, but it wasn't until Monday morning, with a needle jabbed through my inners, that I knew it for fact. The pain was exquisite. It hurt more than when I found out that the freezing didn't take during my first c-section and I could in fact feel the surgeon making the incision!

Mercifully, when I told the doctor that he'd better watch my legs because I couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't kick him in the teeth, he decided to relent. By this point, I had gone into mild shock (thready pulse, blue lips, pale, clammy skin).

The OB suggested that we try again another day. I told him "NO WAY I WAS GOING THROUGH THIS AGAIN! GET IT DONE NOW!"

So he called in the radiologist, took his time about positioning the needle, went in slowly, watching the US monitor the whole time and got the sample. I didn't feel a thing and was left wondering why he couldn't be so careful the first time out.

At any rate, I'm home and am fine. The baby is fine. I'm down one husband and one child now, because I sent my youngest daughter home with my parents on Monday after they helped me pack up some of the house for the move. We're in pretty good shape for that, thankfully, so it shouldn't take more than a couple of days of concerted effort on the part of me and my hubby to get the rest of the house done.

It's cold has heck out here, but at least it's been sunny, so SAD isn't kicking me in the teeth yet. Although I'm so busy with training and finishing up websites for my clients before the move that I probably wouldn't notice anyway.

So that's me. Thanks for reading.

1. so sorry it took three jabs...how horrid...
but i am glad you are resting!!!!

I was supposed to have one with my second child, I was developing heart problems with that pregnancy ...so they wanted to amnio to check the baby.. but when the OB when to do it......the amniotic fluid levels were in the very low normal range and because my heart was in "hyper function mode" they didn't want to wait...good thing they didn't. My placenta was breaking down because of my heart issues and so the next morning they delivered my wittle gal...

I have to say seeing that needle made me quiver in fear....and I didn't even even go through with it...so you deserve a big medal!!!!

2. I had a pillow over my head so I wouldn't see it going in...
I am way to squeamish for that kind of thing.

6. Ouch! I'm sorry! I had a very unpleasant amnio experience myself.
The poke from the needle caused me to have contractions, and it had to be moved a number of times, but they didn't pull it out and reinsert it; they pulled it PART way out, fished it around inside my flesh, and jabbed it back in, repeatedly. It was bad and took ALOT longer than it otherwise would have. I'm glad it's over for you!

10. Breathe Ruby! Breathe....
I got through it, no major problems, and as of yet I haven't heard from the OB, which means:

a) They haven't completed the analysis yet or
b) There is absolutely nothing genetically wrong with the baby.

BTW, are you expecting?

9. Man, that sucks!
I've assisted in many amnio's. Only had one that bad. Then the docs left the pile of needles in the sterile clothes and when I went to clean up I got stuck! So had to draw the patients blood and mine and get tests for Hep C and HIV and all that jazz...what a pain. She was fine though and so am I.

I'm sorry you had to go through all that. I'm glad everything is fine with you and the baby! :-)

11. Glad you got that over with!
Glad things did work out. I recall having amnio about 8 yrs ago. The search for the juice. So I am glad you are resting comfortably!
