Because Mrs. Grumpy asked so nicely...
Incidently, if a discussion of female anatomy grosses you out, stop reading.
No, seriously, you don't want to read this.
Can't say I didn't warn you...
I had my amnio on Monday and let me tell you, it's an experience to never repeat. They had to stick me with a 20 gauge needle three times to get their measely 20 mL sample of amniotic fluid. Thank the Gods for Canadian Universal Health coverage, because if they hadn't have given me some freezing, I think I might be in jail for murder.
The first time, the OB misses my uterus entirely. Yes, he was working from the ultrasound, but it seems that my uterus is tilted back and to the right, something none of my doctors mentioned before now. The second time, he hits the fundus, or top of my uterus. The fundus is the thickest part of the uterine muscle, but because it's right over the best reservoir of amniotic fluid, he tries to push the needle in as far as it can go.
Ladies and gentlemen (if you've managed to read this long) I knew, in theory at least, that nerve impulses are electrical in nature, but it wasn't until Monday morning, with a needle jabbed through my inners, that I knew it for fact. The pain was exquisite. It hurt more than when I found out that the freezing didn't take during my first c-section and I could in fact feel the surgeon making the incision!
Mercifully, when I told the doctor that he'd better watch my legs because I couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't kick him in the teeth, he decided to relent. By this point, I had gone into mild shock (thready pulse, blue lips, pale, clammy skin).
The OB suggested that we try again another day. I told him "NO WAY I WAS GOING THROUGH THIS AGAIN! GET IT DONE NOW!"
So he called in the radiologist, took his time about positioning the needle, went in slowly, watching the US monitor the whole time and got the sample. I didn't feel a thing and was left wondering why he couldn't be so careful the first time out.
At any rate, I'm home and am fine. The baby is fine. I'm down one husband and one child now, because I sent my youngest daughter home with my parents on Monday after they helped me pack up some of the house for the move. We're in pretty good shape for that, thankfully, so it shouldn't take more than a couple of days of concerted effort on the part of me and my hubby to get the rest of the house done.
It's cold has heck out here, but at least it's been sunny, so SAD isn't kicking me in the teeth yet. Although I'm so busy with training and finishing up websites for my clients before the move that I probably wouldn't notice anyway.
So that's me. Thanks for reading.
