What's your recurring nightmare?
I'm not talking about the stuff you fear when you're walking around during the day. Do you have a true recurring nightmare while you sleep?

Mine: I'll be driving around (sometimes alone, sometimes with the family) and I'll make a mistake which plunges the car off a bridge, overpass, into a river, etc. I watch the whole fall, waking up only after we've hit (seeing the car crumple and the window spiderweb) and everyone is dead. One time I cut a turn too short and went off the road beside a bridge and into a deep gully and landed in a river. Another time I was on one of those mega-road exchanges and instead of merging left or right, I went straight -- off the top of the road, landing on yet another road down below.

The really weird part of these dreams is that I can't pull myself out of them. When I was young, I suffered from monster-type nightmares and my mother taught me how to wake myself or change the storyline of the dream. When I try to do that with these dreams, I get the message back that it is real and, thus, cannot be changed. I've even turned my head in all directions while the car was falling -- my mind is amazing at making this particular nightmare very realistic.

So, make me feel better by sharing your recurring nightmare.

1. I have several:
1. Getting stuck in elevators that do strange things, such as go around and around, or fall from the sky at 100 mph.

2. Being back in school, having to turn in papers I haven't written yet, or take tests I haven't studies for.

3. Weird bathrooms with sinks or showers that turn into toilets when I look at them, or toilets that flood the place for no reason, or the whole place is just plain gross!!

:yoiks: :hide: :scared:

4. I get the school one a lot - find out I have a final in a class that I
didn't know I even had and so hadn't been to all semester;

or a paper due that I didn't know about. Or a speech to give in a class I didn't know I had, or that I knew I had but didn't know I had to do a speech.

Sometimes the nightmare involves a performance: I have to perform music I've never seen before because I didn't know I was supposed to be performing it.

16. I have a lot of those school nightmares too.
I'm usually in a situation where I haven't gone to class all year. It's time for finals and I don't know where to sit.

3. I have a couple recurring themes in dreams.
One is that of crawling through a maze with no possible way of finding my way out. I'm crawling through narrow passageways which go on and on. A much more pleasant theme is that of trains. In the dreams I'm in an area with a lot of train traffic and I sit and watch the different trains go by all day. Very peaceful.

5. Tornados
I dream of them regularly. Usually I'm watching them in awe as they approach. When they get too close, I head for shelter. I wake up when they begin to tear the house apart. Very singular dreams, with a feeling of realness like hand-held video.

9. I don't have a recurring nightmare
But the other night I had a dream that my eleven year old nephew was abducted and murdered. In the dream I remember seeing and talking to him and then just a few hours later I learned that he had been murdered.

It fucked me up for awhile the next morning.

:(

10. Flesh-eating disease and/or vampires.
Either subject being incorporated into a dream wherein I am one of the only people not "infected," and I have to keep killing the afflicted and running around, hiding from them. Ugh.

12. People I love die in my dreams, a lot
Every person I've ever had a long-term relationship with, plus my daughter, my brother, and most of my good friends, have died in my dreams. Most of these are violent deaths, though some are totally implausible. My brother got swallowed up by lava in front of my high school and I couldn't do anything about it. People get shot, drowned, and have heart attacks. Fear of loss, much, anyone?

14. My dreams occasionally reflect disasters in the news
After 9-11, I had some very bad dreams of planes crashing.

Most recently, I had a dream about a flood. The recurring theme of the dream was not the actual flood, it was about my insane mother.

In the dream, I'm packing up my car because there is a flood headed toward Detroit. Just as I get my dog and cat in the car, my mom pulls up and wants to go shopping. I tell her there's a flood coming and we have to get out of the way, and she says that it's not going to hit where I live or where the mall is. I said that she can take her chances and stay at my house, but I am leaving and her dog is coming with me. I take her dog, along with my pets, to my sisters. We watch the news and see the flood is about to hit Detroit-I say I can't leave mom to die, so I go back and drown in my car trying to get to her-as I'm dying, I see her driving away safely.

So this dream is not about the disaster, but about how my psyche thinks my mom is trying to kill me!
