9. Today, 12/14/05 is the official opening day for "King Kong" --
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 11:36 PM by Radio_Lady
It's already getting a fabulous rating at the Internet Movie Database:

A total of 8.1 out of a possible 10 with 1,805 votes. That's actual people who have voted, not necessarily critics.

Our local newspaper reviewer gave it a B+; I give it an A on my Entertainment Report Card, although if I had helped edit the movie, I might have shortened a couple of the scenes. The film actually runs 3 hours and seven minutes. TIP: Refrain from drinking anything liquid for a few hours before you see this film, and use the restroom prior to seating. You're in for quite a ride!

In peace,

Radio_Lady

holy hell....

it starts slow, but once it gets going, you're on the edge of your seat for the rest of the ride. I'll definitely be seeing it multiple times in the theater, way worth the 8.75!

the worst part was the kid a few seats across from me who laughed at every little part, including the tense thrilling parts... :grr:

23. Overall a very exciting, moving film.
However, the racist depiction of the "natives" set the movies back about 80 years. I can't imagine if even the original Kong had such awful natives.

I realize cannibalism existed into the 20th century, don't know about today, but are even the worst real-life tribes this horrifying and horrible? Plus, it was weird that the natives were people of different races, painted black, with horrible teeth and filth stuck on.

That was the only negative part for me, the ugly depiction of 'natives'.

25. I love the part in the previews where
Kong jumps way up in the air over the tree tops. It looks like it is going to be a great movie. I'll have to see it next year when it comes out on DVD though. Money's tight as usual.

Please tell me details. Trust me, you won't spoil it for me.

there are monsters galore, and then there's the scene on the Empire State Building

I'm afraid of heights, so I was cringing and I can only imagine what my neighbors in the seat next to me were thinking when I was wimpering out loud.

32. I'm afraid of heights too, but when I am watching a movie I tend
to be okay. I don't know why that is. It could be because I am so clumsy in real life but the actors (or monsters in this case) in the movies have the control then. Hmm, more monsters. Yummy. I like movies about critters, even if they are humongous.

34. Vertigo is vertigo.
I don't mean to sound silly here, but isn't vertigo more serious than fear of heights when it comes to symptoms? I run the risk of getting some parts of your thread deleted if I ask medical quesions, so maybe I should drop it. As a general rule though, all people should have their blood pressure checked. That's a general public service announcement type thing. ;) :D

36. asking questions is differrent than asking for advice
Is it really a blood pressure thing? Maybe it's not vertigo.

I don't know what it is. I think it's hallucinations about heights and space and infinity that overwhelm me.

37. Technically, it could be.
For me, it was. I used to have horrible dizzy spells. I would stand up and get dizzy. I got headaches for no good reason. I would lay in the bed and get dizzy. Also I would hear my own blood "wooshing" in my ears in pulses. I never knew what was wrong. I thought I was just maybe as screwed up physically as my mother had always told me I was. Long story short, I wound up in the health department for a lump. A totally unrelated medical problem for me ended up revealing that I had really high blood pressure. They wanted to hospitalize me because it was so high. They made me sit there for an hour and took my pressure again. It was still too high. An hour later, it had dropped. It was still high, but not dangerously high. Also, that is about the same time the "whooshing" sound stopped. I went on high blood pressure medicine and unless I miss the meds or get really stressed, I rarely hear those sounds any more or get the dizzy spells.

I think vertigo is different though. It just wouldn't hurt to get your blood pressure checked or do it yourself over a period of time. It is known as the silent killer. And your symptoms do sound similar to mine. If you have a regular medical appointment lined up in the neat future, that should be enough. If not, whenever you do go to the doctor, ask them to check if they don't automatically. I didn't develop the high blood pressure until later in life, so it's a possibility.

39. I just had a physical.
My blood pressure is fine.

I'm thinking that my symptoms are more conceptual (like a hallucination brought on by racing thoughts) than they are a physical manifestation.

41. well...
I knew the plot of the lord of the rings and i still think the movie rocked...
and of course sensibilities of special effects and acting have evolved since the 1930's...it will never supplant the original film, but that does not mean it will not kick ass...

42. Some modern special effects are surprisingly weak
Green screens often leave an "aura" around the subject in the foreground, and CGI often looks quite fake. The laborious stop action puppets of the original film often works really well. In other words, newer is not always better.

cgi has come a long way...just watch the frighteners or lord of the rings...or spider man...anyways...seems you have your mind made up...i never said newer was better...in fact i think i said that this newer version will never supplant the old...in fact the older version is one of my favorite movies of all time...but that won't stop me from enjoying this new one...

44. How did it compare to the other two?
I'm dying to see it, specifically because I've seen the others. How geaky is that? My kids want to see it because they had never heard of it before, and where shocked when I told them it was a remake.

Do you think a 10 and 12 yr old would be ok seeing it?

Thanks!

I guess I saw parts of the original when I was a kid, but I don't remember much, so I can't say how it compares for sure. But it definitely stands on its own as a good movie.

46. A fantastic movie
I was skeptical when I heard Jackson was making a remake of "King Kong" I am not a big fan of the original...I don't think I've ever sat down and watched the whole thing, the premise never appealed to me.

And I was skeptical again when I heard it was 3 hours.

But Peter Jackson knows his craft and executes well on it...at least in my experience...he knows how to make this story interesting by bringing out the characters and making the challenges interesting not just as an adventure but as an examination of humanity...like a good Science Fiction story. And I suppose all good literature.

And rather than being to long it goes by almost to fast.

Not to mention the outstanding technical effects.

I highly recommended it.

PS: I wondered if I'd see a lot of discussion about racism in the movie here on DU. I had heard racist charges against the original.
