Speaking of babies: If you had another kid (or your first), what would
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 09:03 PM by Redstone
you name him or her?

Mrs R and I won't be breeding anymore, but we did cut the list of (unused, because we had a boy) girl's names down to three: Marielle, Panayiota, or Caledonia (with reasons for each).

And please, if you're expecting a girl, don't consider Makayla or any variant thereof. My 4th-grader's school is full of them. It's like the Jennifer epidemic back in the 1980s.

So what would be your picks?

35. Our "merged" family was already "stuffed" when we married --
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 10:37 PM by Radio_Lady
Most of us had usual names:

Ellen and Allen married, and already had -- Michael, Karen, and Cindy (his kids), Linda and David (my kids).

For my wedding present, my husband got himself "fixed" 90 days after we got married! That was the best gift he could have given me. Our house was like a Marine barracks with seven people; two full-time jobs -- when we started out, we had one child in EVERY level of the local school system from pre-school to high school. Yikes!

But occasionally, I do float free to think about the "perfect" sixth child we would have created.

But a name?

Wow! I never gave that a thought! (My husband is doing taxes and when I asked him, he just told me, "Put down anything -- I can't communicate about that now!" What a brute!)

I might have named a girl Emily Rose. I might have named a boy Adam Daniel.

But, in reality, we have YOURS and MINE, but no OURS!

2. I can't really see myself having a girl
A boy'd probably be Joseph (for my late uncle) Sandor (part geeky fantasy fangirl thing, part good Hungarian name.) I have no idea what I'd call a girl maybe Nichelle, after the lady who played Uhura on Star Trek.

I'm a dork.

For a girl, it would be Isabella or Tatiana.

13. Whether anyone will know that is another issue. Jews, of course,
would most likely get it, and either think it funny or be offended, and most likely wonder if the kid's parents have any idea what the name actually means.

I think it's also confusing to give a kid a name that isn't spelled normally. It's not a deal breaker - it would take a pretty stupid kid not to get it - but something to consider.

"Amnesty" just isn't right.

That's how there got to be all those Prudences in the Puritan days, and names like Chastity (now distorted by illiterate parents into the sublimely idiotic Chasity).

10. My dear Redstone.......
We did have a boy's name picked out, which we never got to use.....

My brother (bless him) used it on his first-born son!

Andrew Duncan ......

The Andrew is from my husband's side of the family...his grandfather, and his brother....

The Duncan is from my side of the family.......

I think it is a very pretty combo......And it is something else on my nephew, who is half Chinese!

Do let me know about your card, OK?

I think it's German. I've seen it around Milwaukee and burbs, where my family is from (and which happens to have lots of people of German ancestry running around).

It happens to, coincidentally, also be the name of the cartoon character in my avatar. But I SWEAR it is a coincidence. :)

Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 10:51 PM by Redstone
women think in terms of how a kid's first and middles names would go together?

It's true: ask a woman for good kid names, and they'll say "Julia Rose" or "Michael Adam;" ask a guy and he'll say "Sandra" or "Fred" and never give a thought to a middle name.

Look at the posts in this thread and you'll see that this is true.

And why do women do that? Almost nobody, when asked their name, replies with both the first and middle names.

I'm not being critical of the ladies here; just curious. I noticed this a long time ago, and nobody has ever been able to explain it.

44. Well LeftyKid's day-to-day name is his middle name
I'd probably stick with that with any future rugrats, just because it's unconventional (and I like that) but without having to give the kid some made up name or being overly odd. I like the first name of older family member, middle name significant to me, last name precedent I set with LK so the middle name's the most important and difficult bit, really.

Oh, I'm also thinking Joseph Anson is nice. It flows a little better than Joseph Sandor.

I have three friends with kids of that name. Not all the exact spelling but all looking very Michael-ish.

I would love a daughter named Rosie. My daughter's name is Lilian so it seems like keeping with flower-inspired names would be cool.

For boys I like Calvin and Robin, but unfortunately Robin has been co-opted by girls in the US.

63. It very much depends.

I promised my grandmother (before she died) that if I ever had a baby girl I would name the child Elizabeth Rose, after her (her name was Rose Elizabeth). But if I was married and the father's last name was Rose, or Bush (eeeww,) or something else that didn't quite fit, I would change the name to something better suited. Likewise I would be willing to change the name to something we both agreed upon if for whatever reason the father felt strongly against the name I wanted.

If I had a boy... who knows. I'm partial to the old favorites... David, Andrew, Michael, James, Daniel... all those. But certainly I would value and take into consideration the father's opinion (provided the father was going to be a part of the child's life, and not an anonymous sperm bank donor, or I was adopting as a single parent, or some such arrangement), and/or his family naming traditions, etc.

If it were completely up to me with a boy... I don't know. Maybe I would do what I've done with some pets and bring him home without a name for awhile.... see what his personality suggested, try a few different names on him to see what fits before settling on one.

As a cavet, both palm readers I've ever been to in my life told me that if I ever have children, they'll be boys.

Pity that. I was hoping for more intelligence.

71. DA, this is the first time someone's agreed with me
I've thought for a long time it's not a good idea to decide on a kid's name — or a hamster's, for that matter — before you have some idea of its personality. I'd go as far as to advocate not naming one's offspring until he/she's 2 or 3 years old. Until then, you can use a number or something.

For that matter, what's wrong with a number for a name? It'd beat the hell out of a lotta others floatin' out there now. (Remember Charlie Brown's brief friend, 5?)

BTW — I actually did see a Chlamydia awhile back in some Florida paper's birth announcements. :eyes:

But, to answer the question... Llama.

66. I like your girl's name
Probably because it's only a vowel away from my mother's name, Deborah Jean.

67. I like Deborah Jean too.
It's a pretty name. I'd probably go with the names I picked out even if they weren't associated with my favorite musicians. :hi:

I like the name Emily, but that is so common now.

hmm for a girl..

don't know offhand.

I suppose I would totally go along with what the mother had to say on most of that stuff. I'm easy like that.

77. I like old-fashioned names
I might even pick Jane for a girl, but I also like Caroline.

For a little boy, maybe Edward... I do like the name Drake, but I don't like it w/ my last name.

My son's name is Timothy.

80. I'm set on
using Gabrielle for a girl. I like Kaiden Gabrielle, with a 'K' because both Hubby and I start with a 'C'.
For a boy, I like Cameron (dang 'C') or even Mikal as long as it's not spelled the traditional way. I just like the way it sounds so strong with the last name we're using.

I had names I liked better but we're getting ready to take Chris's Grandpa's last name and my favorites don't go well with the new name.
