1. The department would be closed, yes. The computers, however, are not.

So there's still a good chance that anything you ran on Dec. 24 would be taken from your account on the 26th. Not necessarily, but possible.

(although I don't think there's a specific "debt card" department in a bank)

3. Ah, you're waiting for a new card!
That's a different question.

And I cannot begin to predict when you will actually get it. It might only take them 2 days, it might take them 9.

5. If they say 7 business days ....
it will probably be around 5.

Depending on the bank. Last time I opened an account we got our new ATM card within 3 days. BofA was very quick. We opened our accounts on a Saturday and got the cards by Wednesday.

11. Should be pretty quick.
If they ordered it today. You MIGHT get it early next week.

They are pretty quick.

Since there is no long paper work to be processed, it speeds things up a couple of days.

Used to be we'd have to fill out a form, send it to Bank Card services and they key in the the info and they the card would be created.

I can't imagine you NOT getting the card before Christmas.

12. I hate those bastards.
Why didn't you have the charges blocked? You could have questioned the charges and had any further charges from them declined.

But, I see your point. Cancelling the card is the best way to nip the bastards in the butt.

4. Debit card "department"
is basically the same as the ATM department.

Electronic payments (ATM and Debit Card) are posted against an account the same time as paper check.

The difference is that everyone has a daily allowed limit for withdrawls and debit card transactions.

If you go over either your daily w/d limit and/or you available balance, that transaction will be declined.

When you use an ATM card for a point of sale (POS) transaction, the payee's system validates two things:

1. PIN Number

2. Available balance / withdrawl limit

What happens when a transaction is approved, a "memo post" is placed on your account in the amount of the ATM w/d or debit card transaction. SOME systems will place a hold on a certain dollar amount (example you make debit transaction for $49.00 .... the hold could be placed on $60). This is done to protect the merchant from a "bounced" debit transaction.

The transactions are not completly processed and posted until the next business day. (most banks post around 5:00 am daily)
