Poll question: What's yer religion?
As ever, ten slots are not enough, so there's going to be some uncomfortable combinations. Please do not kill me.

The choices are not very reflective of the numbers of members of religious groups in the general population; neither are we. (I've done these things before.)

I have a feeling there's something tying us all together, but I'm not sure it's a deity.

If I had to pick one I'm most agreeable with it'd be Buddhism. (Obviously. :D)

4. raised in a liberal Lutheran church
Now atheist. Still love the pastor of the church where I was confirmed. He taught us that most of the stories in the Bible are just that -- stories. Like Aesop's fables, created to teach lessons. God did not create the world and all its inhabitants in 7 days -- people in biblical times did not understand evolution and people now take the Bible too literally. Etc, etc.

It suits me and I feel no need to prove or disprove anything. It's based on Eastern philosophy, but with other things added that I have learned from inside.

One of the basic dogmas of Johnnieism is that we (fine!...there is only me x() let people believe what they want without mocking them. Everyone deserves the right to believe or not believe in anything they like. It makes no nevermind to me.

26. "Other"....: Spiritualist...not a religion though.
Quite often this word "Spiritualist" is thought of in a Christian sense. I do NOT use it here in this way. I seek enlightenment as to the nature of the spirit which I feel each of us has within ourselves. I do not seek to worship anything, nor am I inclined to convert anyone to my philosophies. If I were to take on the title of a religion, "atheist" would come closest but as another pointed out earlier that is not a religion either. Respect and acceptance of others is what I am gaining from my studies on this matter. I would be pleased to discuss this with anyone.

27. I voted "other" because atheism is not a religion. It is a lack of
religion.

"A" = without; "theism" = belief in god. There are some atheistic religions, but just plain old "not believing in god" is not a religion.

From Dictionary.Com:

Religion (n.)

1. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
2. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
3. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
4. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
5. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

Atheism doesn't qualify as a religion based on any of these definitions. Some people say humanism is a religion. That's pretty "iffy," but not all atheists are humanists. My belief in humanity has been shaken almost as much as my belief in god, so I don't think I am a humanist, either. :)

Calling atheism a religion is like saying "bald" is a hair color. (I can't remember which DUer I heard that from originally, but thanks!)

28. kinda different...
I answer agnostic but really I have my own beliefs. I believe that it only takes one person to believe in a religion for that religion to be true, therefore, we are all right (this is where we all hug). I also believe in an afterlife, mostly because I feel that we have already lived this life and are only remembering it now. This explains lots of things such as deja-vu and premonitions. I can't explain it all - how very religious of me!

Yay!

I'm a spiritualist who hates organized religion. I "worship" through the arts and through loving fellow human beings. I see no need to ever attend church to find spiritual truth; it is in nature all around us, and in every human being's creative, boundless soul. The energy of the earth, of the natural world, is what ties us all together. The idea of a "God" is partially true, to me, but I think that the anthropomorphism involved in deities is ridiculous. Like I said, I believe that what binds us together is a force-field of natural energy, and when we access the arts (art, music, writing, etc.) we connect with this field and are at once both everyone and yet no one.

Just call me a typical writer/musician.

NAC=Native American Church. My wife and a good number of my friends are members and I have attended a few meetings. The feelings I have gotten are pretty good, no one trying to push anything on you really, and its a total inner self experience...plus with the singing, drumming...its an experience that i have come to have respect for...I am not a full fledged member, but I am close in thought/spirtuality with the NAC...The only draw back i see, is people trying to out "indian" one another, or the gossip that surronds it, but I fear, thats within any group, or social setting....but anyways...:)

I was raised mormon though, but i don't claim that....;)

78. Lapsed Unitarian
atheist.
I have no patience for organized religion. Nor am I a believer in a "Supreme Being".

That said, I don't care if anyone else engages themselves in "faith" - but I've got better things to do.

80. Taoist
which in my case is more philosophical than anything, not the traditional Chinese Taoism. So I guess to be accurate, Agnostic with a Taoist view

84. I'm fucked up when it comes to religion.
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 12:48 AM by Jamastiene
I grew up and went to school in a strict fundamentalist "Christian Identity" (again, refer to http://www.splcenter.org for a definition of that kooky bunch) school. I hated Christianity for years. I still hate a lot of what I see of Christianity as an organized religion, but I know that RevCheesehead, my aunt and several other Christians on DU seem to have a totally different everything (mentality, beliefs, attitude, definition of love) than that warped bunch I was subjected to as a kid had. RC, my aunt, Jessie Jackson and other like them have made me see things a lot different than I once did. At one time I totally hated anyone who was Christian, but then I realized some of my favorite people are Christian just not the gay hating, race baiting, "jew" hating kind. I still think Falwell and Robertson are examples of people I do NOT want to spend eternity with, but I'd be happy with my aunt and others on the loving end of Christianity.

I'm still what I would call an agnostic though for now at least. I can't claim anything else. I don't know how to classify myself. I can totally get with the whole "We shall overcome" type of Christianity that you see documentary footage of from the 60's with MLK. That's totally up my alley. Unfortunately, the churches in my area are right of center, further right of right wing, and totally bonkers right wing to the point of bomb building in the name of God (again refer to "Christian Identity" or "Army of God" at the Southern Poverty Law Center's web site or just look up Eric Rudolph and what he believed in.)

Other religions I have read about or tried:

Satanism- no magic contract that will get you whatever you want really exists. Apparently you can't literally sell your soul. Or I sure couldn't find the right instructions. Yet another thing from the Bible that seems to be more parable than "literal." Why? I don't know. Satanism just seems to be another money making religion with no "beliefs" per se as far as I saw when I read about it. Fuck it. I can't bring myself to kill any cats anyhow.

Buddhism- I can say with certainty that the meditation does wonders if you have the time to do it. I tried it and achieved something different that felt totally great. It took me a long time (4 hours) though. I think there is even a story about a modern day Buddha boy who hasn't eaten or drank anything for like 6 months. I have a huge amount of respect for Buddhism in general, but I have a hard time making myself not want anything. Time is also an issue. I just don't have enough of that. I like to eat too.

Witchcraft- Well, I love candles and nature, but I just sort of lost interest when I learned that love spells aren't like on television. Damn why can't more real life stuff be like on television? I love witches but don't always understand what is going on there.

Atheism- Tried it. Didn't seem to work. Something in the back of my mind keeps me from being a total atheist. I tend to get along better with atheists though. I probably should have voted atheist, but agnostic seems to come closer to a good description for me.

One thing I do know for sure. Usually on DU I can find people of all religious concoctions (again with the spells idea) who agree with me on something. It's not a total loss that I just don't get the same thing out of religion consistently liket others do. At least, I know now that all people of a particular religion aren't crackpots who blame black people, Jews, and gay people for everything.

85. I'm a Roman Catholic
And have been since before I was born
The one thing they say about Catholics is
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.

You don't have to be a six footer
You don't have to have a great brain
You don't have to have any clothes on
You're a Catholic the moment dad came.

and so on

Thanks to Michael Palin in Monty Python's Meaning of Life.

86. Protestant in that I believe there's some divine power
and that our souls are all a part of that but Agnostic in that I don't know if there's a Christian God behind all of this. Maybe that makes me more of a Deist. I try to see value in various forms of belief.

I was raised Catholic and often still identify with it, but my own personal beliefs are closer to buddhism or a general Deism.

91. Formerly Protestant...
But now I am fed up with Christianity being more of an evil political movement than a religion.

I'm not aligned with any particular belief system at this time, but I am starting to follow matriarchal religious traditions.

I voted "other."
