Poll question: What is the most annoying catch phrase?
Edited on Sat Nov-22-03 11:41 PM by Gringo
I have an extreme dislike for catch phrases, especially those popular among white yuppies/middle management types.

Feel free to add your own.

1. I hate movie catch phrases...
such as these damn cliches:

"Hasta la vista, baby."

"I'll be back."

etc, etc, etc....

2. "camp" and Hoo-ah....
Edited on Sat Nov-22-03 11:28 PM by tjdee
I have a personal tick with "Dean's camp" or "the people in Kerry's camp"....LOL, maybe it's because I used to work at a camp, I don't know.

But, and this has been going away for many years, that Al Pacino/Scent of a Woman "HOO-AH" thing...sounds like clearing throats, and overall obnoxious (in my very personal opinion).

But eh, mostly I'm cool with people saying whatever they like.

7. Corporate meeting bingo
I read about a game you can play at corporate meetings. You pass out bingo type cards with the following words/phrases placed in a grid;

synergy
strategic fit
core competencies
best practice
cascade
bottom line
revisit
expeditious
24/7
out of the loop
benchmark
bucket
value-added
proactive
win-win
think outside the box
fast track
result-driven
empower (or empowerment)
knowledge base
at the end of the day
touch base
mindset
client focus(ed)
paradigm
game plan
leverage

As you hear a word or phrase, you mark the box with that item. When you get a row or column filled in, you yell out 'bingo'.

Edited on Sun Nov-23-03 07:49 AM by baldguy
". . .rather than reactive."

The opposite of "reactive" is simply "active". It's a perfectly understandable and usable word. "Pro-active" would be an antonym of "con-active", which is meaningless.

Another one was "interface" being used to mean "meet". An interface is a conection between pieces of hardware. People don't interface with each other.

At least, not at work.

At least, they're not supposed to.

45. They're all incredibly annoying and meaningless...
I don't know why so many of us get caught up with meaningless business phrases and hollow-hip diets and exercise mantras. Is it the human search for the easy solution and answer? I don't know. But I sure wish there were more voices in popular culture that spoke about the hollowness of such phrases and practices.

Yeah, I'm humorless today.

phrase that could be said in plain English without having to sound "insider" or jargon-ish...
How about 'next time' or 'in the future?'instead of 'going forward?'
Same with 'downsizing' (putting a whole bunch of people out of work)
'collateral damage' (killing a whole bunch of innocent bystanders)
'friendly fire' (killing our own by mistake/stupidity/poor planning)
etc etc etc...

I really do loathe all the ones mentioned in the poll. Corporate catchprases really do annoy me.
But the use of "get over it" as a response to any intelligent discourse regarding the stolen 2000 election just chaps my ass.

It galls me to think that many people would prefer we "get over" the theft of democracy.
