I just procured "White Heat" and "Angels With Dirty Faces"
For those of youse who don't recognize them, they're Cagney's two best gangster flicks. Well worth tracking down! "Angels" also features The Dead End Kids.

Jeez, I'm old. But I'm gonna have a Cagney evening tomorrow! I KNOW you're jealous. :bounce:

2. Funny- I hadn't thought about it, but
it may have an odd bearing on last night's threadburst re a certain death row controversy.

3. Cagney is brilliant in "White Heat"
I love that movie. Try "Public Enemy" also.

4. Isn't one of those supposed to have some heavy gay subtext?
I thought it was an early Cagney film--the SF film critic wrote an article about it. He said if you're looking for it, it's very obvious, and really puts a spin on the whole movie. Can't remember which one, though. (Or was it "The Public Enemy?")

5. News to me
Perhaps it's White Heat- him and his mother are obviously hooked on each other, and one scene even has him curling up on her lap. But that's more obviously an oedipus complex than anything overtly gay.

7. I love those movies.
One year the local PBS station showed a lot of those old gangster movies and I taped a bunch of them. "Dead End" is another good one with the Dead End Kids. This rich guy is filing charges that one of the kids attacked him with a knife, and it was just a little penknife! And the guy's got his arm in a sling. Man, I laughed my ass off.

I also taped the original "Scarface." If you've never seen that, you should definitely check it out. It's a good one.

"I'm on top of the world, ma."
