Teacher Forces Girl To Remove Religious Necklace (WICCAN SYMBOL)
<snip>

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. -- A Seminole County mother is speaking out after her daughter's teacher forced her to remove a necklace, which is a religious sign.

The necklace is a pentacle, a sign of the Wiccan religion.

Aleigh Garmen said Indian Trails Middle School teacher Mary McNeal told her to remove the necklace because it represents Satan. The girl took it off, but with her mother's permission she was transferred to a new class with a failing grade.

Her mother feels it's no different than someone wearing a cross.

"It's your right to be Christian, just like it's my right to be Wiccan, just like it's my daughter's right to wear a necklace," said the girl's mother, Angi Martin.

Channel 9 tried to talk to the teacher, but she would not comment.

The school district said it should have never happened and gave the teacher a warning.

7. Huh? No offense but that is a rather dumb thing to say
I'm not trying to pick a fight but that is not only unrealistic but it has nothing to do with seperating church and state. If someone wants to wear a religous symbol they have every right to. If they want to say a prayer or do some sort of religous ceremony (as long as it doesn't create a nuisance) they have every right to do just that.

9. The school district reprimanded the teacher
a win for freedom of religion in my book.

11. Right.... isn't that what I said?
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 10:03 AM by MissMillie
I think I said that wearing this symbol is no different than wearing a cross, which is fine.

The school board told the teacher not to do this. And I agreed with them.

Did you misunderstand me?

24. doing good
Jus tgot over a bit of a cold. She is starting to pick things up and hold them/manipulate with her hands.

We got a "report card" of sorts yesterday from daycare and my wife was tearing it apart saying that it was not right ---it didn't show that our child is beyond the best child that had ever been in the world.... I was laughing my ass of at her. Finally she reread it and saw that our girl was being evaluated on stuff she isn't even supposed to be doing yet.

Funny ass shit. I will not let my wife go there-No she isn't a MIRACLE any more than the last baby that was born in this room or the one who is about to.....

Too funny.

3. This is what happens when religion is given official status.
It quickly sets about suppressing all other religions.

The not-in-the-Constitutioners pretend not to see this while salivating in anticipation of their chance to squelch heretical faiths.

4. A right side up pentacle
doesn't even EQUATE with Satan. An upsidedown pentacle can indicate Satan worship, but since Satan is a Christian construct, it really doesn't mean shit in the Wiccan world.

That teacher needs a lesson in tolerance of other religions, and needs to know the difference between Christian concepts, pagan, Wiccan and everything else in between.

What a doofus. I'd make sure the child got a passing grade as well in recompense.

5. Who are you and what have you done with the real Matcom?
Edited on Tue Dec-13-05 09:37 AM by BigMcLargehuge
Where is the guy who accidentally set himself on fire trying to sup-up his Orek vaccuum with a ramjet? Where is the woman who simply felt compelled to dress like a spawning salmon and jump the fence at the Polar bear enclosure. Where is the guy who was caught cheating on his wife with a Purdue Oven Stuffer Roaster? Where is the guy who feels he was born into a human body, but has the soul of a female alligator?

Asked to remove a necklace? School says teacher was out of line.

THAT'S NOT MATCOM NEWS!!!!!

:hi:

Hows it goin man?

And I ll say the same thing if someone made me remove my religious symbol. These goons are horrible. Can we protest this persons church or send an email to the school asking for this 'educators' dismissal.

26. How Ironic
Seeing as this happened at Indian Trails Middle School. Indian beliefs are much closer to Pagan than Christianity ever thought about being.

Good for the school district.

27. The district did the right thing, but why does the girl have to accept
a failing grade? That's not fair. If I were the mother, I'd fight it -- her daughter should not be penalized for exercising her free espression of religion just because the teacher is a bigoted idiot. Moving the girl into another classroom is for her own protection and I don't see why a failing grade has to be given for it. What a crock.

32. Unless the school bans crosses on jewelry, this is bullshit.
And I have a feeling the school does not. BUT - I iddn't bother to read the article, so I'm speaking out of my ass on this one.

But if they don't ban ALL religious symbols, then they can't ban any.
