Do you like Phil Collins?
I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, "Duke".

Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual.

It was on "Duke" where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think "Invisible Touch" was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument.

In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to "Land of Confusion". In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. "In Too Deep" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting.

Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like "In the Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds". But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. "This is Sussudio", a great, great song, a personal favorite.

1. I heard "Invisible Touch" on the radio yesterday.
I'd never noticed before how out-of-place the instrumental solo is.

However, I do like his first solo album.

(You *are* joking, aren't you?) :hide:

7. Well, I didn't think you were completely serious.
After reading your carefully considered words about Genesis' and Phil Collins' straight-ahead pop music, after seeing that you dismissed early Genesis as "too intellectual," I thought it was too ironic to be taken at face value.

Maybe I just need some shut-eye. (I need to get up in five hours.) At any rate, I hope I didn't offend.

Cheers!

8. If you "Invisible Touch," the album, I concur
I don't care too much for the title track but the rest of the album, particularly the Domino Suite is great.

I like his drumming work as well; it shines on such collaborative efforts as Howard Jones's "No One Is To Blame" and Philip Bailey's "Chinese Wall."

Good Christ, do you have an obsession man? An American Psycho obsession? Or do you just really really agree with that character's assessment of Phil Collins, most notably and unnervingly "This is Sussudio"? Because if you do, if you DO, I tells ya.......

18. Yes, Mr. Bateman!
But seriously (no pun intended), I've always liked Collins, both with and without Genesis, and I also happen to be one of the few who likes both Collins-era and Gabriel-era Genesis.

I used to dance to that; but only at certain times. It takes the right kind of girl onstage to do that one justice; but oh....the power....unmatchable.LOVE it when I can get it....
