Origin of phrase "brain salad surgery"?

ELP had the album out by that name in 1973.


Dr. John included pharase in his '73 song "Right Place, Wrong Time":

Just need a little brain salad surgery
Got to cure this insecurity
I been in the wrong place
But it must have been the right time

But it must have been the wrong song

But it seems like the wrong arm

Did it predate these two usages? If so, what was the original context? If not, who was first, ELP or Dr. John?
