So what do you read in a coffee house?
I thought about going to one tonight with my Linux book ready to read. :D Or is that too geeky, bring in a computer book to read?!

To you coffeeflys (as in "barfly", sort of), what do you read there?

1. Nope, Linux is great!
When i go, I'm usually there because I need to write something, so I tend to bring theology books and/or the Bible. Sometimes I just takes novels. Or if I've been out shopping, whatever book I've just nought, or whatever book I'm carrying at the time to read on the subway, which is usually a novel, though sometimes a historical book on physics, numerals (like, history of Pi, etc.), math, or other science.

For the cigar bar, back when NYC allowed people to actually *smoke* in a cigar bar for God's sake, I'd take American history. Somehow, it always seemed appropriate - either Teddy Roosevelt's biography, or Franklin's, etc. Something about those leather chairs and cigars and martinis just begs for reading about the great leaders.

In the coffee shops, I've seen all sorts of reading - I've seen people composing music, working on Chinese, talking about stuff, lots of philosphy readers, a number of business majors around Columbia i've seen reading business/accounting books and doing homework, physics and chemisty, all sorts of stuff.

Just walk in like you won the place, that youa re supposed to be there, plop open that Linux book with all determination, and everyone will assume you are a God.

And amke sure, every half hour or so, to scream out "First Contact was Shit! Nemesis was super-sized American-style shit!!"

2. Well, my primary motive is the attempt to engage in conversation
and all that. But reading about Linux would be a nice time-passer...

I dunno about screaming out bad things about non-Kirk "Star Trek" though... (most people tolerate or enjoy Kirk-bashing but they hate it when somebody criticizes Picard... :eyes: )

3. It's not criticizing Picard, it's criticizing that ass
Brent Spiner for his ridiculous shitular screenplay.

Anyway, if yer looking for conversation, you better hold the linux book up so people can see the title, and then they'll come by and say "Do you know a lot about linux?" and then you can say "Enough to mount your hard drive at the root or anywhere else with just a few (key) strokes" and then you're golden. :-)

Or, anyway, the oddness of reading about linux, so long as people see that's what you're reading about, could be enough to spark some conversation.

4. LOL!!!!!
That's probably taking the "direct approach", but I'd make sure I'd get to know a person before I dish out the goofy double-entendre humor...

6. I read the paper in a coffeehouse every morning.
A good conversation starter is to laugh out loud at something and then look around guiltily.

9. Take a Harlequin Romance.
Explain that you only read Nietzche and Schopenhauer in dark, smoky bars.
