HELP! Best place to buy a laptop online?
Hey y'all, i need to buy a laptop for my dad, from my mother, for xmas online tonight. He doesn't need anything exciting, he just wants it for email and some word processing.

He needs a laptop, as opposed to a pc, b/c he's handicapped and bedridden. So, nothing fancy or difficult for me to purchase. Ideas? Suggestions? Pleeeeeze?

:)

1. Budget really matters with a laptop
Dell is a problematic suggestion, but one I have to make. They are good machines and the pricing is reasonable, but the company has a laundry list of political and social issues that make some people boycott them.

Toshiba builds a good one too, but stay away from HP. As for where to buy, just about any electronics site works. I've used NewEgg.Com for years and they're both fast and inexpensive, but they sell a lot of brands so you have a lot of choices. Circuit city, CompUSA, or any of the other chains will sell you one online for a reasonable price too.

2. I got an IBM T-22 Thinkpad
from Overstock.com for less than $800 last year. Typing on it now. Some are lease trade-ins, some are factory reconditioned. They have a lot of different laptop makes and models, all reasonably priced. You can also get an extended warranty.

3. Well, just about anything can handle email and word processing...
that said, I second the suggestion about HP. They have a bad reputation.

Is your family going with wireless internet? I'd recommend it, if he's bedridden.

5. I bought a new Dell Inspiron on Ebay at a great price.
Only problem thus far was me spilling my full cup of coffee on it.

Note - I flipped it over immediately, drained, dried, replaced the keyboard/mouse pad and it was running like new. Lucky. Very lucky!
