My grandpa used to use that one. He also used: It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a pool table. And: It's colder than a ditch diggers ass.

It's really kind of funny that he even used those expressions though...we lived in California, where a cold day meant upper 30's :shrug:

the balls off a brass monkey is said to be an old sailing ship Navy expression-wherein the iron cannon balls are stored on a 'brass monkey'. The freezing temperature causes the brass to contract faster than the iron cannon balls thereby causing said iron balls to fall off the 'brass monkey'.

Interesting huh?
