I've heard a lot about them but never checked them out until your post. I think they're very nice. I don't understand why they're controversial.

25. I kept hearing something about "90 dollars" this seven-year-old was
trying to save up! Pretty tough when you're not even getting an allowance.

She plays with other dolls at my house -- ones I pick up practically new at thrift stores all over the country. You should have see the wonderful toys and dolls at the Goodwill store on Oahu. New stuff -- in packages. The kids played with them happily, and we packed them up to bring back home. They go in Grandma's "Magic Closet" along with clothes, tea sets, and other kiddie goodies I pick up along the way.

24. Oh, but those evil dolls will impress them upon her fertile mind
even before she can fully comprehend them. One day she'll be innocently playing with her dolls, and the next you'll find her "playing abortion doctor" with her little girl friends. Burn that doll now, before it's too late.

27. I've had to divorce myself from sex discussion with my grandkids --
Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 01:41 AM by Radio_Lady
Except for explaining that boys have a penis and girls have a vagina -- and insisting that there is NO ENVY of boys by girls. (Who the hell wants something like that hanging between your legs?) My granddaughter, age 7 and grandson, age 5, get more of a kick out of checking out Grandma's herniated navel (I put two spots for eyes and a bow for a mouth with eyebrow pencil, kind of like this :) They call it Grandma's happy face! (Should have been repaired when I was a child, but nobody suggested it then.)

I heard the story about women who were boycotting the American Girl dolls because of the financial contributions of their parent company to liberal causes, but I couldn't explain that to such a little girl.

Speaking of children not wanting to know about the sex life of their parents, did you catch this interview with Anderson Cooper? It's just priceless!

Talking Sex with Mother (Anderson's mother is Gloria Vanderbilt -- still alive after all these years!)

I agree on the lack of penis envy. Yuck. x(

That interview was quite funny. I can't imagine if I read my mothers sexual memoirs and found them to be that racy.

33. My mother once asked me if there was a "difference" between
Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 05:56 PM by Radio_Lady
the love-making of one man versus another. (She married at 18, had me at 19, so I don't think she ever had any real experience.) I had much more sexual contacts in my life, so I told her "Of course, there are differences. Some men are tender and terrific, some men are absolute oafs, if you know what I mean."

Later on, I learned she had had a "fling" with my uncle, the husband of her sister-in-law, but I never discussed it with her. Thinking back, I may have learned about it from my first cousin, after my mother died.

All I remember is Mom was terrified that I'd get pregnant. I was one of the first women to demand birth control (a diaphragm and spermaticide cream) from the college health office. That was probably in 1956 or 1957.

My daughter never discusses anything sexual or physical with me. I had hoped for a more open communication, but it never happened. I have no siblings, so if I want to know about sex, I read or go on the Internet.

35. My mom never discussed sex with me
The closest she got was handing me a booklet about the "facts of life" with all references to sex crossed out with a black magic marker. I got to find out about how my breasts would grow, underarm hair and menstruation, but that was it. To learn about sex I had to go to the public library. Luckily I was armed with a library card and much curiosity so I learned a great deal on my own.

38. I rummaged through the bookcase on the top shelf.
My mother and my aunt never even knew I found the books and read them. I was nine years old and completely in awe. The books were, "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask)" and "The Hite Report." Both were great reading material. I'm not sure how many nine year olds would be allowed access, but I knew all about std's. I knew all about the riskiness of some forms of birth control, etc. I can't go into details. Let's just say, I was the most informed kid ever after reading those two books.

Edited on Thu Dec-08-05 02:16 AM by Radio_Lady
I tried to introduce Ken, Barbie's boyfriend, and G.I. Joe (still available, I guess) to both boys. The older one, now 15, did like the Transformers, but they were not really dolls. My two think dolls are for girls, even though I try to remind them they might be fathers one day.

Oh, well.
