NEED ADVICE.. . . . . . PLEASE!!!! at wit's end.
My job sucks...correction, it's not really the job so much as it is the person who likes to constantly remind me that she is the boss. Worst. Boss. Ever. Need advice on either how to stick it out or make a midcareer leap.....how do you make the leap while still keeping your day job? seriously at my wit's end here....

1. Don't quit until you have another job
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 03:52 PM by MsAnthropy
It's easier to find a job when you already have one. But it's not worth wasting one minute in a job you hate, life is too precious. Start looking in the newspaper and craigslist.com. I've changed jobs 7 times and compiled a variety of experience at all of them. Best of luck--I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

2. Sometimes you just have to put everything on one roll of the dice..
I quit a very lucrative job of 11 years in the electronics business in one day (Gave two weeks notice, but made the decisionin one day.)

I had told the owner of the company 11 years before that NOBODY ever raise their voice to me more than once because I simply will not stand for anyone shouting at me.

Well, he did, and I did, and ended up starting a real nice business that's doing well to this day (15 years later).

3. thanks both of you....
I am just at a loss as to how to start a new job while keeping this one.....won't the new job call for references? What does the boss say then..? Can you be fired for looking for a new job....probably not, but won't they at the very least make your life miserable for wanting to go somewhere else?

5. It's still a free country (mostly)
A lot of companies don't give references anymore. My company will only verify that I do work here, nothing about my conduct or performance. Either fax your resume and cover letter from work when no one's around or go to a Kinko's and fax from there or mail from home. Prospective employers realize that you are still employed somewhere so they are discreet. You can tell them to call you at home if you don't want to be called at work. I say, GOOD! if your boss finds out you're looking. Maybe he/she will realize how miserable you are and make some changes so it's worth your staying. If not, it's time to be finding a new job anyway.

6. Sounds like you are already miserable.
But to answer your question: you are hired on your interview, not on your references.

Usually, the potential personnel director will not even call the present employer. Even if he/she does, your present boss can get into legal hot-water for firing you just because you are looking around for another job.

4. If you are at your wit's end you need to change
But start looking BEFORE you quit. Grit your teeth and bear and it and get something else set up to go to. There's craigslist and monster and other internet resources.

I don't know what you do for a living or what qualifications you have. Depending on the job (if it's a so called "professional" career), there are professional headhunter agencies that you can go to and they'll shop you around to companies that are looking for specific skills/experience.

But make sure you have something lined up first before you quit. A bad boss isn't nearly as bad as not being able to pay rent/make your mortgage or go to the grocery store.

Khash.

9. What is it that makes her the Worst Boss Ever? Is there anything
that you've documented that could/should be reported to her superior? I have one of "those" bosses too...early part of her life was seriously outta control, and now she's trying to make up for it by being a TOTAL control freak in every other aspect of her life.
I talked to HER boss about it, and approached it from the angle of my boss is making enemies out on the floor because of her 'my way or the hiway' attitude; since she's so new, can you send her to some training that would help her understand her role here and give her some much-needed people skills?
It made me feel better, it was presented positively, so it didn't make me look bad, and it's helped some...she's more of a team player now than she had been.
