Do your eyes water when you chop onions?
Some people's eyes aren't bothered at all. I was boo-hooing yesterday trying to chop some onions. My eyes just can't take it.

:silly:

1. Yeah, but not when I use the sweet 1015 onions.
Those don't burn my eyes.

3. But they're soooooo good for you!
Onions are great for the digestive tract. They help prevent certain types of cancers, and they taste wonderful!

5. I love onions. When I was little, my mother told me I would
eat them like an apple! Which I find kind of disgusting now, but I put onions in everything! :9

Always plenty of good onions in the house. We use a lot of garlic, too.

4. Wearing soft contact lenses keeps the eyes in good shape
Years ago, I used to wear the hard lenses and I was bothered by onions  but when I switched to soft, I never cry around onions any more. B-)

8. That is weird. We discussed that
while we were making our Thanksgiving dressing (we get together each year and make it). My friend was saying that onions never bothered her before she had her lasik surgery (she wore contacts). But now, the onions kill her eyes. We thought maybe the contacts helped!

12. Contacts seem to do the trick.
Of course, I'm the one who always has to chop the onions since people know they don't bother my eyes.

11. Place a piece of bread in your mouth when chopping onions.
Seriously. Let it protrude a little past your lips and it'll keep your eyes from watering.

I am crapping you negative.

16. A tidbit I found while googling this important subject
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 11:46 AM by tyedyeto
"One further bit of information. The chemicals which I described above are both volatile AND water soluble. This means if you cut the onion while holding it under a spray of water, the chemicals will wash down the drain and will not enter the air in as great an amount to cause your eyes irritation."

http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/bio99/bio99086.htm

On edit: another suggestion:

"Using a knife, cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away (don’t put it down the disposal!). This piece contains the part/gland that makes baby Jesus and everyone else in the room cry when you’re chopping it up. Once you’ve gotten that piece out, chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.

Been doing it for years, and it works like a charm. You know your cone is too small if it doesn’t work, because you’ve cut into that teargas grenade."

20. Yes - very much.
I've tried every trick in the book and they do nothing for me at all.

I have very sensitive eyes, and the slightest things will make them water. How I ever managed to get used to contacts I'll never know.

32. Sharp knife and knowledge of onion anatomy is the secret
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 02:26 PM by BrotherBuzz
Always use a very sharp knife. The edge should grab or bite a fingernail surface at a low angle with very little pressure, rather then slip off - the object is to cut the onion tissue without crushing the cells. Sharp is very important.

Always slice onion in half - top to bottom - not along the equator. Peel skin and place cut face down. If you want finely choped onion, make quick slices (here's where the sharp knife is imperative) from bottom leaving all attached to top, then cross cut. If you want julian slices, skip the longitudinal slices and just cross cut. Finished onion pieces falls away without tears.

Hey, it was a lot easier watching Julia do it then explain it. Hope this tease helps.
