I saw them on The Daily Show on Thursday night, and all she could play was a simple rock beat... and seemed to lose rhythm occasionally. Her drumming got very annoying after a while. And on top of all of that, that bright red skin-tight outfit was very unflattering on her.

Jack, on the other hand, seems to be pretty good on the guitar, and IMO has a unique (and appealing) voice.

I guess they wouldn't be the same without Meg though :-)

But I idolize Dave Grohl's drumming (and singing, and guitar playing, etc), so I my expectations of good drumming might just be too high.

1. Yes, she was pretty lame....
But I think the striped sown sound of the White Stripes calls for that.....

3. She did look really funny bouncing around behind the drumset.
It was good entertainment

That was my thought when I saw her. :silly:

2. TWS are to rock what Phillip Glass is to classical music
In other words, they're minimalists. So Meg's drumwork is perfect for this stuff.

10. "The White Hypes"
I can't stand "press-darling" bands. Every critic trying to out-praise the other ones... I wonder if they're just playing us for suckers.

6. You're not the only one.
I think so, too. It's especially noticeable live.

7. It's amazing what a recording studio can do. Reminds me of the South Park
episode where they become a boy band and all their crappy voices are run through a machine and come out sounding like 'N Sync.

13. Wrong - White Stripes are very old school recording purists
They track everything analog, mostly live. They are probably most similar to old blues acts or people like Neil Young in their recording ethic.

So you won't hear any drum machines or a single digital track from them.

I'm not a huge fan, but what you hear is exactly what they did in the studio.

8. I've never understood how (or why) people can say one "Rock Drummer"...
...is better than another "Rock Drummer," they all sound pretty much the same to me, except for Neil Peart from "Rush," he's definitely the best "Rock Drummer" ever.

I was actually quite impressed at how full the "White Stripes" sound was, with only two members and all, and the fact that she actually (sort of) played the Tambourine at the same time (it was attached to one of her drum sticks).

Yes, that was rather ugly what she was wearing, and Jack had the Johnny Dep, 21 Jump Street/Pirates of the Caribbean look going, but hey, it's 2 people producing all that sound.

Not that this is saying much, but they are one of the best "Bands" currently out there, and almost every music critic out there is wetting themselves over them, so basically, they don't totally suck.

12. There are very few good rock drummers... You can tell when (and if)
they go into a drum solo how good they are.

That's why I love Dave Grohl. At one of the concerts I saw him at 7 or 8 years ago, he swapped with the drummer mid-song (without missing a beat) and went into a 5 minute long drum solo, then passed back (without missing a beat) and finished the song.

16. She does what's right for their music. Plus she's a woman who rocks!
She's a major inspiration to a lot of girls, so I'm 100% behind her.

I think that a lot of musicians who are technically proficient are actually terrible musicians. They don't do what's right for the song they are playing, and try to be really flash all of the time. Sometimes, actually most times, the best thing a player can do is just support the song and help it groove.

Grohl is a fantastic drummer, and I could never aspire to play his style. He was the perfect drummer for Nirvana's style, but he also knows how to lay back. Listen to his drumming on Big Me - very understated. He played the right thing for the right song.

I don't know if Meg is actively terrible - she's not technically good, that's for sure - but she does what's right for their music.

18. I completely agree that simple is the best for the Stripes.
Drumming is one of those things that I have always wanted to do but am not coordinated enough to pull off.

It really sucks because I have a great ear for music, can pick out the tinyist errors, good rhythm, but can't sing or play worth a damn. Frustrating sometimes.
