Need your thoughts: tricky career question
Edited on Fri Dec-02-05 03:37 PM by LuckyTheDog
I have the chance to apply for a new job. If I got it, the new gig would cut my daily commute by about 30 miles (round trip) and allow me to pick up some new skills. The work environment would be good and I'd have the chance to help "blow the horn" of my local community to the local and national press -- which is very appealing. Sounds good so far, right?

Here is the hard part: The job would be for a regional chamber of commerce. Now, part of me says that, hey, the group IS technically nonpartisan. And it could be a GOOD thing if a few Democrats took high-ranking positions in that organization. On the other hand, I worry that I'll find out once I am there that I am in the "belly of the beast."

Thoughts?

1. If the pays equivalent, I say go for it.
The chamber of commerce is only as evil as the people who are in it.

2. Pay would be a smidgen less
But the shorter commute would probably make up for that. Plus, I think I could do contract work on the side for my current employer.

3. The only reason that the Chamber of Commerce would go republican
is if Democrats avoid it.

4. Chambers are non-partisan
No "technical" about it. But they exist to promote business and trade, and that often means backing Republican issues.

Personally, I couldn't handle writing PR. (I've got an application on my desk for a copywriter position with a nation-wide recreation firm, but I can't bring myself to send it in.) But that's me.

This sounds to me like it'd be a good move.

5. This would be my first PR gig
But for a lot of reasons, it seems tempting.

6. I say GO FOR IT!
It sounds like a great opportunity! You'd probably make up for the income shortfall in the price of the commute. AND maybe more time at home with that cutey kid of yours :)

:hi:

ps. where ya been?

7. I say that for any hope to make the COC stop being a repug stronghold
Dems have got to join, just like they need to join the NRA and take the power away from the rwing crazies.

Take the job.

8. congrats on 500 posts btw
I would say take it for all the positive reasons. If you end up in the belly of the beast, you can always a) move on again, and b) get an insider's knowledge of the working of the beast.
