Seriously, do men find this sexy?
Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 03:46 PM by LynneSin
I'll be the first to admit that I could stand to skip a few meals, but this is ridiculous! Give this woman something to eat! And we wonder why teenage girls are starving themselves - they see pictures like this and think they have to be this thin in order to be "sexy".

:puke:

I'm not implying she has a problem, just that she is unattractive to me. If she were to add a little weight, she'd be more attractive (IMHO). I think she's a very pretty woman, otherwise...

10. There is a difference...
The fat woman isn't making lots of other women feel bad about their bodies.

This insane drive for the emaciated look in Hollywood and on the catwalk is contributing to many women being on Prozac.

25. This couldn't possibly make anyone feel bad about their bodies
If anything, Lara is a victim of lookism and striving to obtain an unobtainable ideal as much as someone like me who's on the other end of the spectrum. But we don't help anyone by pointing a finger at them and saying the way you look is unacceptable, whether they're 98 pounds or 255.

48. you are right and you are wrong
You are right that we shouldn't be pointing a finger, and I know I have been very guilty of this, so I do have to apologize. In fact, I just left a post called, "She has an illness," which on second thought, is probably a catty and unhelpful comment.

However, this picture could certainly make a vulnerable person feel fat. Have you ever visited the pro-ana sites? Usually a prominent feature is the section called, "Thinspiration," where they have pictures of such notables as Callista Flockhart (spelling?) and Kate Moss and the like.

I haven't visited that type of site lately, but I am willing to bet if I did, that Lara Flynn Boyle would be a new icon.

It is a difficult issue. It seems intuitively obvious to me that women should not be allowed to starve themselves to death or near-death, but pro-ana's feel that it is a matter of aesthetics and that if they are willing to risk death for their sport of being thin, how is this any different from any other death-defying sport like, say, mountain climbing?

My personal belief is that Boyle should seek medical care to see if she can recover a healthy weight. But on the other hand I am just going by...yep...judging her how she looks, so I can understand why I might be perceived as judgmental.

14. I think she _must_ have an eating disorder.
No one gets that thin through exercise alone. And if she's not crazy, she'll realize that looks bad. So yeah, you're right, we shouldn't make fun.

But, at the same time... sheesh, I wish Hollywood would stop making emaciated women seem glamorous.

I don't think her weight is ideal. I think she's looked better in the past when she had more meat on her. She was in Poltergeist 3, I believe, in her late teens, and looked a lot better in that department. That said, I wouldn't pin in it on gay men as a group. "Fashion gay men" are but a small group.

during that press walk and MAN, if she looked that bad on televison you have to know she looks even WORSE in person.

She's been trying to fend off rumors about her weight by claiming she has always been skinny and that being the the BCP added weight on her for awhile.

I hate it when stars forget that they have appeared butt-naked in many, many films that allow us to remember what they looked like before. I remember when that gal had healthy JUGS for gosh sakes.

Clearly she's walked down the eating disorder/drug use path. I hope she gets some help, whatever it is she's dealing with.

Her melon is huge! Totally out of proportion.

Ya know, my cousin is naturally that thin. Maybe a little more meat on the arms, but not much. Ya know what else? Crack-whore thin comments hurt her feelings just as much as beached whale comments hurt bigger gals. I've tried to get her to hit the weights with me, but she's afraid that she'll end up looking like a teenage boy.

But yeah, my cousin's neck and shoulders look quite a bit like that when she wears a dress like that.

35. In all fairness...
The angle of the pic, the gawd-awful dress, and the way it clashes with the red carpet do nothing to make this woman look good.

As far as her figure's concerned, it seems like TV cameras make women look larger than real life; thus many prefer to emaciate themselves rather than risk losing their jobs. Facts are facts...a woman's acting ability is of secondary importance to her appearance by today's entertainment standards.

54. An apology to women who are naturally thin
heck, I use to be 5'10 and weigh 125 back when I was in college and I drank and ate like you wouldn't believe.

THere are some women who are just naturally thin.

This person and even people like Calista Flockhart and Rene Zellwinger have been normally weighted people and suddenly they show up ultra-skinny. (yes, I know Renee gained weight for the first bridget jones, but that was 25lbs. After the movie she had to have lose about 40lb because she was way too skinny from even her Jerry Maguire days).

It's just frustrating that this is what gets attention on the red carpet and are made to be 'beautiful' when there are so many other women out there that are not only beautiful, they didn't starve themselves through whatever means to get that way.

If you are naturally thin - God Bless you for being so and I wish I had my old metabolism back (but after college I became less active and kept eating the same - ugh). But seriously, anyone who feels they have to stick their fingers down their throat or take drugs or do whatever to get THAT thin like in my first post, please get help.

Beauty comes from within your heart and your soul and radiates out. That's what counts the most!

But since I'm skinny, it's probably more a matter of physical compatability more than anything else.

65. The dress is not flattering
She's looked better. My 19-year old daughter lost too much weight this past spring, not intentionally. She was studying at college, working, and competing with crew. She was also a little depressed after a relationship ended. I think that affected her appetite. She didn't look healthy; she lost her curves. She's put some of the weight back and looks much better. Weight is also tricky as you get older. My mother lost 20 pounds when she was in her 40's. Her figure looked great but her face caved in (our cheekbones are rather prominent) and she actually looked older.

66. Nope, but
part of that's because she basically looks sick - some have said that she is sick, so it's not her fault that she looks so severely depleted. Not that other kinds of weight-reducing afflictions - drugs or eating disorders - are necessarily the 'fault' of the afflicted in at least one sense. Based on what she used to look like, I'd guess that she's lost probably an unhealthy amount of weight, maybe including a fair bit of muscle mass.

On the other hand, perhaps that dress and angle conspire to make her look far more fragile than she is. Well, somewhat, anyway.

And, yes, the Hollywood machine is terribly destructive in terms of imposing unhealthy body image and mercilessly punishing those who don't conform to the ideal du jour. For her sake, I hope that she can get on top of whatever's caused her to drop that amount of weight.

71. Healthy is sexy... be it round or skinny.
My college roommate was Bulimic. It used to amaze hell outta me to go somewhere with her and she'd be looking like a concentration camp survivor and without fail some woman would come up and trill, "Oh my Gawd! You are so thin, you look FABULOUS!!!" She had that same caved in look and dull skin that Lara has in the picture, BTW.

I took that roommate to the hospital a couple times when she'd get her electrolyte balance outta whack and her heart would start to race. I watched her live on nothing except V8 for days at a time then she'd eat everything in sight and take massive doses of laxatives. She'd hide the empty boxes so nobody knew how much she took...

There is a lot that makes a woman/girl develop an eating disorder. It is impossible to say exactly what point a healthy body image becomes skewed to the point that you end up looking like she does. But I will hazard a guess that she's not a healthy woman both emotionally and physically.

Slender is great, and I envy all the women who have never had to worry about how much they weigh. But Lara has gone beyond "slender" or "skinny" or any of the normal metabolic differences that we ALL deal with when it comes to body image.

The girl is sick. I hope she gets help.

Laura
