Employers: Is your hobby your employee's job to deal with?
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 02:07 PM by jane_pippin
Didn't think so.

And yet, there's an annoying little habit my boss has gotten himself into and I don't know what to do about it.

His hobby involves equipment that he stores in the building. Every once in a while--I'd say once every 3 months or so--he asks the janitor to move his equipment from one area of the building to another so that when the boss is ready to amuse himself with his hobby stuff the equipment is all set to go.

I think it's rude for him to ask his employees to stop what they're doing just so he won't have to carry something later on. He's able-bodied and much younger than the maintenance guy. Plus, 90% of the time he only shows up to the building when he's here for hobby-related stuff. I guess as the owner he's allowed to do that, but it's still lame.

Fucking micro-managing absentee pseudo-aristocrat. Grrrrr.

Rant off.

1. Is your boss the one who is a photographer?
If he's the one, and I'm remembering the other story correctly, it seems like he's really taking advantage of people, which is pretty shitty of him.

2. That's the one.
And I think taking advantage of people is his second hobby.

It's so annoying.

3. totally unprofessional.
Unless it was in their job description, employees are supposed to be performing business, not personal functions.

4. Exactly. He's just lazy and likes wielding power
And he does it in the boss from office space kind of way.

"Go ahead and ask (Janitor) to take my equipment from the 3rd floor, bring it over to this other room. Oh and tell him I'm going to need......"

It never ends. Last year he tried to get me to make his family's christmas card. Idiot.

5. if he owns the business
then pretty much whatever he tells you to do is part of yr job, at least if you're paid by the hour, who cares if he wants to waste his money having you move equipment around

6. But I wasn't hired to be his personal servant and neither was my coworker.
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 02:49 PM by jane_pippin
It isn't my job to mail his ex-girlfriend's tankini negligee back to her.
It isn't my coworker's job to put his toys away for him.

I mean, I see your point but just because he's my boss doesn't mean he can make me do whatever goofy task he's too lazy or chicken to do for himself. I have enough to do as it is.

7. Aw FUCKin' A!
He's got hobby stuff going on tomorrow which means I'm gonna have "models" and letchy photographers overrunning my office all goddamn day.

That's great. That's what you want. I'm sure the other businesses in the building will understand why there's some lady in animal print spandex smoking in the hallway. (Because see, the rules apparently don't apply to animal print spandex wearers.) I'm so glad this has something to do with the business' mission statement---OH WAIT! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT WHATSOEVER! Hooray!

UGH!
