ONE British man in 11 has paid for sex, according to a study that appears today in Sexually Transmitted Infections, a specialist journal.

The findings are based on two national surveys on sexual habits, conducted among 6000 British men aged 16-44 in 1990 and among 4700 in 2000.

In 1990, 5.6 per cent of the men said they had paid for sex at some point during their lives, with 2 per cent saying they had done this within the previous five years, and 0.5 per cent within the previous year.

A decade later, the comparable figures were nearly double.

In 2000, almost 9 per cent of men said they had paid for sex, while 4.2 per cent said they had done so in the past five years, and 1.3 per cent in the previous year.

Those who in 2000 said they had paid for sex within the previous five years were typically aged between 25 and 34, were single and living in London.

"A significant proportion of men in Britain pay women for sex, and ... this proportion is increasing," say the authors, led by Helen Ward, an epidemiologist at Imperial College London.
The 2000 survey also found that a third of respondents had had 10 or more sexual partners within the previous five years. But only 15 per cent said they had had a test for the AIDS virus.

one of my husband's coworkers went to some famous strip club in Atlanta for a party during a convention. He was with all the "executives"...turns out one of the fellows paid for a lap dance that was far more than a lap dance.

Want to know the "funny" part? The fellow was so upset after the lap dance because only after it was done did he notice that he had had...unprotected sex with the woman....and he spent the rest of the convention worrying about whether he had caught the clap...

Some people do the job because they love it (like me), some people do it because it's easy money, some do it because they have no other options.

I think one in ten is a bit small - the one thing you can count on is that people lie on sex surveys. So I think it's a little higher than that. But even so... so what? I've paid for sex, I've been paid for sex. Yeah?

Not everyone has the time to put into meeting the person of their dreams. Some are handicapped in some way and not viewed as viable sex partners. Some people's desires are not being met by their SO. Should they live a life with no erotic connection to another human being? No.

The scary thing about that article is not the prostitution, but the attitude toward STDs.
