It helps when you decide that mind reading IS IMPOSSIBLE, you CAN NOT KNOW what other people are thinking, you can only know what they tell you that they are thinking. This is very liberating, because after you realize that you can not know what people are thinking, it is a short hop to not giving a sh** what most people, except friends and family, think. I used to worry about what people thought about me, till I came to this realization. Now I do not care what people think, except for friends and family.

It also helps when you come to the realization (This is not meant to be nasty, just a kindly observation that applied to me, too, when I used to worry what people THOUGHT) that the world does not revolve around you, and that most people do not spend their time thinking about YOU at all, but spend it thinking about their own concerns.

These two realizations can help you overcome worries about what people are thinking!

3. Only for those who have to deal with the insecure.
Knowing that you're insecure means that you know what you have to work on yourself. And as an uber-"patriotic" cartoon once said, knowing is half the battle.

5. Knowing might be half the battle
but overcoming it is the tougher part.

9. If it's such a curse for you, having to deal with the occassional insecure
person, consider the fact that the insecure person has to deal with the whole world. Then maybe you'll reconsider your use of the word "only."

11. Perhaps you'll reconsider the word "curse"
I don't think of a curse as being something you can absolutely can take control of with your actions. I have insecurities myself, absolutely, but I acknowledge them and take control of them rather than just letting them run my life. Other people can't control or fix the insecurities in those around them, and that's why I term that the curse.

13. I don't personally use the word curse. However, to blithely say that
you can control it yourself misses the point. I've led an interesting life, done many things that others haven't. I know that people are not out to get me, and yet, I'm a diagnosed "social phobic" - I simply, even after 48 years, cower when I'm around people physically.

14. I'm similar to you.
I don't consider it a curse at all. No one is perfect. So you work on yourself and push yourself despite your fears.

I should also note that insecurity and psychological disorders are entirely different things. There is no doubt in my mind that you can control insecurities. I am not stupid enough to think the same of clinical depression, bipolar, or something else.

4. It certainly is
I've fought it most of my life. Afraid of failure and afraid of success as well. So here I sit, stuck.

8. True.
However, sometimes keeping in mind that a lot of nastiness is just masking insecurity has helped me deal with it. A little. :)
