What do you think about Photoshop's Bevel and Emboss layer style?

It was a better world when it took a loooong time to do that - now every assjack wannabe "artist" who's managed to find the way to page 3 of Photoshop for Dilettantes makes the goddamn bubble-letters. I've never known a serious professional designer to use bubble-letters except under three circumstances: 1) working at a catatlog mill, where you have no choice but to make everything crowded and horrid; 2) as a joke; 3) Interning at Pen & Pixel.

work for buttons and roll-overs for web. Other uses depend on the designer. If you are a decent designer you can use it for lettering and god knows what else if you use it judiciously. It's the same with drop shadows. They can be used effectively and they can be overused.

If you're a professional, and use it as it's intended to be used, that's one thing...if you're an amateur, and use it it gratuitously (just because you've recently discovered it), then that's another thing entirely...

Kinda like centered text. I don't know what the attraction is, but you can always spot the amateur in a website design, an advertisement, or any other document, by finding one in which ALL the text is centered...
