equal-opportunity aphrodisiac
http://www.newyorkmagazine.com/lifestyle/sex/annual/2005/15061/index.html

"Is the World Ready for Libido in a Nasal Spray?
Now entering Phase 3 clinical trials: the first real, honest-to-God, horny-making, body-shaking, equal-opportunity aphrodisiac.

Horn of rhinoceros. Penis of tiger. Root of sea holly. Husk of the emerald-green blister beetle known as the Spanish fly. So colorful and exotic is the list of substances that have been claimed to heighten sexual appetite that it’s hard not to feel a twinge of disappointment on first beholding the latest entry—a small white plastic nasal inhaler containing an odorless, colorless synthetic chemical called PT-141. Plain as it is, however, there is one thing that distinguishes PT-141 from the 4,000 years’ worth of recorded medicinal aphrodisiacs that precede it: It actually works.

And it’s coming to a medicine cabinet near you. The drug will soon enter Phase 3 clinical trials, the final round of testing before it goes to the Food and Drug Administration for review, and with the FDA’s approval it could reach the market in as soon as three years. The full range of possible risks and side effects has yet to be determined, but already this much is known: Putting that inhaler up your nose and popping off a dose of PT-141 results, in most cases, in a stirring in the loins in as few as fifteen minutes. Women, according to one set of results, feel “genital warmth, tingling and throbbing,” not to mention “a strong desire to have sex.” Among men, who’ve been tested with the drug more extensively, the data set is, shall we say, richer:“With PT-141, you feel good, not only sexually aroused,” reported anonymous patient 007, a participant in a Phase 2 trial, “you feel younger and more energetic.” Said another patient: “It helped the libido. So you have the urge and the desire. . . . You get this humming feeling; you’re ready to take your pants off and go.” And another: “Twice me and my wife had sex twice in one night. I came in and I just raved about it: ‘Jesus, guys . . . 58 years old and you don’t do that.’ ” Tales of pharmaceutically induced sexual prowess among 58-year-olds are common enough in the age of the Little Blue Pill, but they don’t typically involve quite so urgent a repertoire of humming, throbbing, tingling, and double-dipping. Or as patient 128 put it: “My wife knows. She can tell the difference between Viagra and PT-141.”

The precise mechanisms by which PT-141 does its job remain unclear, but the rough idea is this: Where Viagra acts on the circulatory system, helping blood flow into the penis, PT-141 goes straight to the brain itself. And there it goes to work, switching on the same neural circuitry that lights up when a person actually, you know, wants to. "

1. Meanwhile, there are no new antibiotics
being developed, let alone tested, by any of the Big Pill outfits, even though more antibiotics become useless every year as the bugs mutate.

Let's hear it for profit driven medicine!

5. Vasopressin?
I remember reading about a medication (I think it was for blood pressure), called vasopressin that was administerd nasally - as a side effect it caused intense orgasms and heightened desire.

Could this be the same drug?

9. Could be the same drug. And just as Big Pharma found out the short term
side effects were making people horny and thus put into circulation it will be proved to cause massive brain hemmorages...

I think I'll wait to order mine, though it really does sound fun!

6. Truly effective herbal sexual stimulants are already in common use.
Same-day use: Damiana leaf may be smoked, eaten, or infused into a tea (1 tbsp in 2 cups hot-but not boiling- water, steep 10 minutes, serve with honey and lemon or stevia to sweeten). Consume 1 hr before intercourse. Damiana causes a mild euphoria and increase in libido in men and women.

Daily use: The dietary supplement L-arginine (3 capsules per day, 1 hr before bedtime) causes a general improvement in libido and sexual function in men, and a general improvement in libido in women (particularly around menopause).

7. I've had great results with yohimbe bark
actually if there are no bad side effects, the nasal spray sounds like it might be kind of fun. i don't know why all the negativity about it?

8. Oh, yeah! I forgot about yohimbe bark.
Here is a study that strongly supports L-arginine and yohimbine together to increase sexual response for post-menopausal women with reduced libido.

It refers to two other studies using L-arginine and yohimbine together in male subjects.

10. Melanotan II
http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/M/MSH.html

“In most vertebrates, MSH is produced by an intermediate lobe of the pituitary gland . Its secretion causes a dramatic darkening of the skin of fishes, amphibians, and reptiles. The darkening occurs as granules of melanin spread through the branches of specialized melanocytes called melanophores .

...

A second synthetic version of MSH — dubbed Melanotan II — also darkened the skin of male volunteers. Unexpectedly, it also caused many of them to develop penile erections. This has raised the possibility of using MSH to cure impotence."

12. Oh, great!
Melatonin induces sleepiness.

Take the melatonin, get an everlasting erection, and fall asleep with it!

18. not the same thing
PT141 is a pituitary based hormone.
--------------------------------

http://familydoctor.org/258.xml

"Melatonin is a hormone made by a part of the brain called the pineal gland. Melatonin may help our bodies know when it's time to go to sleep and when it's time to wake up. Melatonin supplements (in pill form) can also be taken. There are two types of melatonin that may be used in these pills: natural and synthetic (man-made).  Natural melatonin is made from the pineal gland of animals. This form could be contaminated with a virus and is not recommended. The synthetic form of melatonin does not have this risk. If you are not sure if your melatonin is natural or synthetic, ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking it."

Melatonin has been available for yrs. PT141 is a novel compound. If approved, it will be worth multibillions. I do not normally trade in stocks but this one...? I'm thinking about it. It would be fun to own a piece.

16. That's good news.
It would come at a time for some of us who have that desire to sow the wild oats we didn't get to in our teens and 20's.
