My ass hurts and I'm sleepy...
I have been sitting in the same position reading for 31 1/2 hours now. Only get up to run to the restroom and to grab drinks.

Someone encourage me to keep going, because right now I want to go to bed.

I am on a reading marathon. Have read 28 books in the past three weeks. Two more to go, then BEER!

Ok, encourage me not to take a nap. Get me over the hump so that I can go back to reading about Eugene Debs.

REally, say anything, just keep me awake!

Any relation to Milton Fried (of "Contract as Promise" fame)? Sorry - flashing back to the bad old days of philosophy of law, which comprised my LAST eyeball-gouging lame text marathon. Fried and Atiyah and Locke, OH MY!

Egad...and I am complaining about history! I couldn't deal with 30 philosophy books, no way.

Mine are:

Goodwyn and Lafeber and Hahn...Oh MY!

25. it's not that tough
the secret to successfully majoring in philosophy is this: never read anyone else's work with the idea of actually understanding that work. Just read enough to formulate a coherent assessment of why you disagree with the author, and try to use some of the same big words s/he did. It's almost always worth at least a "C."

Can't do that with history, unless you're a republican.

10. LOL! No distractions, now!
No...not unless you consider me laid up on the couch reading about Eugene...although I do admire his political philosophy, he's probably not in any condition to help me out.

I am rushing to get finished so I CAN get s'faced tomorrow, though.

Damn, I am 37 and I still look forward to getting 'faced. I need to grow up.

They are ALL history...14 on American Indian and 14 on Populism and Socialism.

Reading them to finish my prep work for my PhD comps. I want to be finished TODAY!

(Think Veruca Salt: "I want it nooooowwwww!")

:hi:

OH, and on edit, one bio on debs and one on american empire.

Sounds like fun, eh?

17. Interesting subjects, non?
But I can, like, totally relate to wanting to get them the fuck over with already. (I had a crush on Veruca when I was wee laddie. Not the one in the movie, the one in the book. Loved her name. :loveya:)

When you get through this torture, I'd love to hear more about what your focus is. I'll send you white light.

20. Thanks Burt...
they are very interesting. I adore the populist movement. Great book if you ever get a chance is Democratic Promise by Lawrence Goodwyn. He envisions the populists as being forward looking businessmen who created the only mass democratic movement in American history...a cool book.

Otherwise, I have read so damn much I can't even remember what I have read. :-)

15. Read, damn you, read!!
Look at it this way--I'd rather be reading, even history, than sitting here at work. If I have to be stuck here, the least you can do is read in my place!!

Cat :)

23. Nope!
All the people I have seen today are assholes. :) Well, okay, not all, but the assholes totally overshadowed the nice ones (isn't that always the way?) I'd rather be alone with Eugene. ;-)

:hi: jchild!

ps. Okay, okay, I feel SLIGHTLY sorry for you. Being a social creature myself, I feel very out of sorts when I don't have human interaction for long periods. But still!! ;-)

22. I'm headed back to the books...
the excedrin and Mountain Dew have spiked me, so maybe I can at least finish Debs.

400 pages in bible-size print is MORE than anyone should want to know about ANYONE's life.

Thanks DUers for the inspiration!

Later :hi:

30. LOL! bun rub
LMAO! my butt cheeks are literally numb from sitting all day. Wish I had a treadmill so I could walk and read.

I am taking a break to eat. This is going to sound Sling Blade-ish, but I'm having biscuits and fig preserves.

I have no groceries--a 10 lb. pork loin in the freezer, but I could pound nails with it.

I am STARVING!
