Holy Crap! The new iPod costs more than my rent!
The 60GB version anyway. The 30GB is "only" about 82% of my rent or so.
I guess somebody isn't going to get one for Christmas.

If you have advice about older iPod models and/or where to get them, (I assume they're still in stores even though I can't find them on the Apple website), I'd love to hear it.

Thanks. :hi:

I should have said it's more than my half of the rent, but that's not as dramatic.

5. I suppose not. That's what was asked for, but maybe another
kind would be ok too. I don't know anything about MP3players other than that they exist, so I'm open to other options.

There are several different types to choose from.

Creative, RCA... etc.

Very reasonably priced.

There are many really good alternatives. I'd rather spend the money on more music.

30. For what?
I have more crap secretly installed on my computer from god knows what that I'll be boycotting everyone and their mother if I really thought about it.

Sony was caught and they're trying to make amends. And from the list of CDs I doubt that any of them are on my computer.

Sony is also a very blue company so somehow it just all equals out to the fact that I'm ok with my Sony products. I mean what, should I buy DELL!!!???!!!

Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 11:37 AM by jane_pippin
or if 30 would be excessive or just right.

He's a DJ and has hundreds of records. I think he said he wants to go through them and put some of them on the iPod/mp3 player and then sell the records on ebay. I'm not entirely sure what the plan is, but I know there is one.

I'll have to do some sneaky asking to find out more information. That might be a good place to start.

And thanks for the information. I'll look into the Sony versions.

31. 1gig is about 300 songs
I've been immersed in MP3 technology for about a month now. 1gig players hold about 300 songs. That's one of the reasons I like my Sony Netman because it uses Altrac3 technology instead of MP3. Altrac3 is about a third of the size but same quality. My Netman holds about 500-600 songs.

I have about 1700 songs on my computer and trust me, I don't need all of them on my Netman. I add and remove stuff as needed but I do carry all my my Led Zeppelin collection so that's about a third of my space right there.

15. I need some suggestions too
I want to get an MP3 player for a friend but really have no clue as to what's available. I looked at the IPod Nano but I think it may be overkill, she doesn't need alot of storage, it just has to be very user friendly and preferably small and light so she can easily use it doing household chores, dog walking, etc.

Any suggestions for a good entry level MP3?

20. Be aware that the video ipod and the nano are VERY scratch prone.
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 12:41 PM by WeRQ4U
They changed the screens and the plastic coverings for this year's ipods and they scratch when touched by ANYTHING. The ipod photo had a tougher exterior. Unless you don't care what your ipod looks like, you'll have to spend about 30 bucks or so to get a decent case for it (And considering the damn thing costs 400 bucks, I would think you would want to keep it looking nice)

Plus, the video option (and that is what it is, an OPTION) while pretty neat, isn't really that great. First of all, apple does not supply ANY software with the device to convert the videos that you already have, to a format that the ipod can use. And although there are plenty of these programs available online, many cost money. Second, the process of taking a regular DVD and converting to a format the ipod can use not only takes forever, but it also may cost you some money (for a reputible program). And although the playback, once you DO convert the video, is OK, it's still in 320x240 resolution on a 2.5 inch screen.

Finally, they changed the size and the connectivity of this year's ipod. They took away the firewire port. And they stopped giving a wall charger with the product. You have to buy that separately. (For shame on this one, so lame). Therefore, if you don't have a powered USB2 port on your computer, you can't charge your ipod. Also, this means that many of the accessories from previous ipods will work on your new one. No Griffin iTrip. No voice recorder. No camera. No cases. The wall charger and docking kit WILL work, however. But like I said, you have to buy these separately.

It's a beautiful little product and the sound quality of your music will be second to none, but there are flaws. Just thought I would let you know about them. I don't complain, however, since i got mine free. Lol.

21. Thanks for the information...it's very helpful!
He probably doesn't need the video--though I'm sure he'd have fun with it--which is why I was hoping to find an older version. He's in a band and I'm guessing he'd take the thing on tour with him so chances are it would get a bit beat up. (Plus, I'm not spending $400 dollars on him in the first place.)

I think I'll either hit ebay and see what I can find or else get a non-apple mp3 player for him.

Thanks again.

28. Just another note here.
HP made 4G ipods. They were 20 or 40 gig I think. ALthough they aren't serviceable by Apple, and they've been discontinued by HP, they are cheapers, and basically the same machine, with an HP sticker. Just an idea.

24. I have the 2 gig iPod nano
although I have ±30 gigs of music, there's no way I'd ever want to listen to it all at once, so I got the 2gig nano for about $200.

It does what I need it to do, has a good display, and the memory is all flash-based-- no moving parts. Which is good because I drop stuff a lot. :dunce:

25. You could always do what I did.
There are LOTS of dead IPods on Ebay being sold by people who dropped their IPods, dunked them in water, or whatever. I bought three of them for a total of $50, and combined the parts to build one functional IPod :)

This method does require that you have some basic technical skills and at least a passing proficiency with a soldering iron!

40. So did I.
But my brother in law conned me into trying it for HIM. So I did mine without really trying. I signed up for some Realplayer free trial or something like that and then emailed my referral link to my family and friends. 5 of them to did it and I kept checking the site. Then last thursday, while I was raking my yard, the DHL guy came to my door and delivered a box with a new 30g video ipod in it.

Completely shocking actually. But I love the thing. I already ordered a hard case and some new headphones for it.

Now, since the ipod one worked, I'm trying to get a PS2 as well. LOL. I'm a sucker.
