4. At least I knew my schedule before choosing my career.
My weekends are Friday-Saturday. No more late night Saturdays - I dearly pay for it the next day.

6. Wow -- how'd you manage two days off?
My husband used to take Mondays off and they gave him hell for that. Two days were out of the question. Things must have changed in the last 17 years ... or you have a nicer church.

10. Our conference demands that all clergy get at least 1 day off a week.
They strongly recommend two consecuative days.

They love our clergy here. :)

12. That's really good.
Someone has finally recognized that ministers need time off. Perhaps we should have tried your conference. Ours was pretty bad. :(

13. Where was that?
I spent the first 6 years in North Carolina. I had to flee for my sanity's and self-esteem's sake. I loved the people and the area, but the "women can't be preachers" got old - very, very old.

Now I've returned home. I went from 2 weeks of vacation to 4 weeks, plus the mandatory day off.

14. Oops! Sorry to fall alseep last night ...
We were in Wyoming Conference, which is NE PA central southern NY. Had a bishop who was all gung-ho about "serving", so we weren't allowed to have any needs. We lived in a fire trap that only followed one rule of the parsonage standards -- it had a separate entrance to the office. So I went to work as a programmer at IBM to try to save enough money to buy a safe house. That was frowned upon b/c it wasn't in the nursing or schoolteaching fields. I was a poor excuse for a preacher's wife, I guess.

My husband worked all the time and had to beg for his paycheck. We were very young, so I sort of understand the "women can't be preachers" thing in the context of "you're too young to be a preacher." Either way, it's a tough one. He refused an assignment after we finally bought our own home and moved out of the parsonage (which was condemned after we moved out). You know what that means.

I'm glad you found a good place. You sound very content there. :)

7. They pay him overtime, but they are jerks about it.
They constantly crush morale and leave people hanging with comments like "if we don't start doubling our output, I don't know how much longer"...kind of crap. Hopefully he won't have to put up with it much longer. It's unfortunately life in the motor city these days.

8. Oh yes.
Beat down the little guy as much as you can. Begrudge them of everything. Keep them in the dark about everything. I swear korporate Amerika would love robots instead of people.

9. Me too.
It's a temp gig that's supposed to be M-F, 9-5, but after several late nights during the week and a 1PM-10PM schedule today, I've gotta go in tomorrow morning. I'm kind of pissed off, because I've been planning to take my daughter to the Santa Claus parade, and in the likely event I get stuck there for hours and hours, it's going to fuck that all up.

You'd think that a multi-national corporation that holds $95 million in assets could scrape together enough goddamn change to hire a couple more folks for their finance department such that people wouldn't be practically living in their fucking office.
