You act like French people!
Some woman called up on C-Span in support of Moran's War and said that the "Democrats should stop acting like French people!"

   :woohoo: :applause:

23. You know, maybe this whole deal was a mistake.
Maybe we should write to Parliment and ask forgiveness.

Maybe Mexico will take back the Southwest and France should get Louisiana back.

13. It's amazing to me that anyone could think this way.
Before GWB, I used to occasionally tell "French" jokes. Maybe they were in bad taste then, too, but I didn't mean anything by them. Now I won't tell French jokes at all because the RW has turned them into scapegoats.

GO FRANCE!!! :)

24. Not new, Mark Twain regularly beat on the French.
They're an easy target, being the seat of modern culture, and so full of pride. Ripe for American anti-intellectuals.

Wine, cheese, mushrooms, ballet, philosopy... who needs that stuff?

26. Are you implying that Mark Twain was an anti-intellectual?
Edited on Sat Nov-19-05 09:37 PM by Nevernose
He was not anti-intellectual by any stretch of the imagination. He did not enjoy picking on the French (and the Germans, Italians, Arabs, Californians, Mormons, other Christians, the RIch, the Ignorant, etc.).

He did it because he could, and because it was fun.

Twain's essay, by the way, on "The Awful German Language" is a true masterpiece of both commentary and humor.

The guy on CSPAN was probably just an asshole, true, but I beg you to disassociate Mark Twain's motives with those of some random telephone Freeper.

29. I should have been more clear.
Mark Twain made some great jokes about the French. The French, being effete, and the epitome of European culture, made a good foil for the folksy American humorist, whom I greatly admire.

Period. Carriage return. New line. Unrelated topic.

Modern Americans, some of whom are anti-intellectual and obsessed with machismo, find the French a handy target, especially since they opposed the war and are very civilised. Add to that their pride in their culture, and a certain perceived arrogance, and they will be a mark. I know them, I lived in France for a time.

I did not mean to imply that Mark Twain was anti-intellectual. I was saying that Americans of all types, and for many reasons, have made sport of the French. It's part of our tradition.

Hope I cleared that up for you.

I'm from Chicago, a city built with strong French influence. We don't know about this 'culture' of yours. Moreover, I'm Irish...and Irish people don't bash the French.

You say that no one in Chicago bought "freedom fries?" And then how do you explain Bill O'Reilly?

Can you speak for all of Chicago when you say they don't know about culture? Even if that's so, I'm merely saying that some Americans, over the years have taken shots at the French.

Personally, I loved the time I lived in France, and the people I met, even though there were some who tried to rake me over. I have some waiter stories.

I'll let Mark Twain speak for himself:

A French married lady cannot enter even a menagerie without bringing the purity of that menagerie under suspicion.
- Mark Twain's Notebooks and Journals, Notebook #19, July 1880-January 1882

The objects of which Paris folks are fond--literature, art, medicine and adultery.
- - speech at the Stanley Club in Paris, ca. April 1879

France has neither winter nor summer nor morals--apart from these drawbacks it is a fine country.
- Mark Twain's Notebook

France has usually been governed by prostitutes.
- Notebook #18, Feb.- Sept. 1879

A Frenchman's home is where another man's wife is.
- Notebook #18, Feb.- Sept. 1879

In Paris they just simply opened their eyes and stared when we spoke to them in French! We never did succeed in making those idiots understand their own language.
- The Innocents Abroad

French are the connecting link between man & the monkey.
- Notebook #18, Feb.- Sept. 1879

A dead Frenchman has many good qualities, many things to recommend him; many attractions--even innocencies. Why cannot we have more of these?
- Notebook #20, Jan. 1882 - Feb. 1883

I like to look at a Russian or a German or an Italian--I even like to look at a Frenchman if I ever have the luck to catch him engaged in anything that ain't delicate.
- Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven

I don't think you can say that no one in Chicago knows about this.

On edit: I should add that Mark Twain was a character, played by Samuel Clemmons. And many of the opinions voiced by Twain were with his tongue in his cheek.
