Doom 3 playable at QuakeCon 2003
Activision and id Software announce that Doom 3 multiplayer will be playable at QuakeCon 2003 in Dallas next month.

Activision and id Software have today announced that Doom 3's deathmatch mode will be playable for the first time at QuakeCon 2003 in Dallas next month. The annual multiplayer gaming event is being held at the Adam's Mark Hotel from August 14-17.

"What better way to celebrate QuakeCon than to unveil to our fans a preview of Doom 3 multiplayer," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "While everyone knows that Doom 3 is the most terrifying and scary single-player experience ever created, multiplayer delivers the intense competitive action that our fans can count on. It's a natural to debut the Doom 3 multiplayer experience at QuakeCon, the world's preeminent fan-based multiplayer gaming event."

Looks like it's almost time for a computer upgrade.

1. Do we have a DU Clan?
Haven't Deathmatched much of anything in a while but I am not too shabby. Do we have a DU Clan on any of the platforms right now? Or is anyone interested in forming one?

2. What about a...
RTCW:ET clan? That way the Linux and FreeBSD geeks can get involved.

9. I don't know about right now
But once Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 come out, I think we should form one. I'm up for it. I've never been in one.

3. The Doom3 ATI leaked test

was what I've seen of it. It's truly remarkable, even for being so unoptimized.

I built my new machine expressly so I could play D3 when it comes out. Everything I've seen and read tells me that this game will give some people nightmares. It's that intense.

There's one scene in the demo shown at E3 a year or two ago in which a big, half-lion/creature from "Alien", half-robot thing is dragging a body down a hallway. The body leaves a blood smear as it's dragged; I believe that's the first time that kind of texture painting has been seen in a first-person shooter. Anyway, it drags the body into a bathroom- complete with large wall mirrors, urinals, etc- and begins to feed.

I won't describe how incredibly gross the next part of the scene is. Suffice to say if you've ever watched Discovery Expedition, Animal Planet, etc, you can get a pretty good idea of how it feeds.

The creature then leaves... and the thing it was feeding on gets up and attacks you. God, the thing looks like it's enjoying being dinner.

There's also a shot in the intro to the game (well, the intro I saw, anyway) that shows a man chained to a stone block... by his intestines. Oh, and there's a creature that attacks you by throwing his tentacle arm at you, then reeling it in. "Die, mortal!" he screams as he attacks you.

Apart from the gore, D3 will have new particle effects and realistic ragdoll physics (shoot something at the top of the stairs, and it'll tumble down like a ragdoll would. Physics at work), as well as breathtaking bump mapping and dynamic lighting (shadows are cast and rendered in real time, and objects that occlude the lighting, for the first time to my knowledge, cast dynamic shadows). Glass bends light in the new graphics engine; objects react to gravity.

D3 will be the most realistic-looking and feeling first person shooter to date. Just don't let your kids play it unless they're old enough to handle blood and guts, because id has definitely pulled out all the stops on this one.

on edit: it is my understanding that there will be an actual linux version, as well as (I think) free linux binaries for those who buy the Win9X version. So linux DUers need have no fear.

5. I'm more exicted for Half-Life 2
Seriously, have you seen the demo video for that? It's simply shocking. I think I need an upgrade to play that one...

6. Agreed...
Althought Doom III looks awesome. Half-Life 2 seems to blow it away in terms of performance squeezed out of available hardware.

I have a 2500+ Athlon overclocked to a true 2500 mhz putting in line more with a 3ghz Pentium 4, half a gig of ram and a Radeon 9700 and I'm still concerned with the performance I'll be getting with Doom III. Half-Life 2 on the other hand I know will run smooth as a baby's butt.

7. And btw...
does anyone know the recommended specs for Doom III? I fear that every month they delay the release, the specs for it will go up.

8. ....
They gave a spec estimate, but I forget it. They said it would be quite hard on a lot of systems. Half Life 2 is looking spec-fucking-tacular though. And yeah, does anyone else play RTCW: Enemy Territory? I started like two days ago, but I have a knack with shooters, so I'm looking for a clan.

13. Those creatures in Half Life 2
look eerily similar to the creatures in Starship Troopers.
