Did your parents stay married? How long?
Do you suppose people are more likely to stay together if their parents did? I hear that you're less likely to get divorced if your parents stayed married. What do you think?

Got divorced when I was 18 months after 15(?) years. Glad they did. My father's an ass. But I hope that theory is not true because I'm getting married in a year.

8. Yes
My parents stayed married until my father's death 10 years ago.
When he died they had been married for 40 years.
My wife left me 3 years ago because of my disability.
Not that it effected our nonexistent sex life anyway.
We were together for only 4 years.
I'm glad to be rid of the bitch!

We celebrated their 50th Anniversary last week. When one looks behind the facade I see two people staying together for appearances. My question would be how many people are there who stay together because of some religious guilt imposed by the church?

19. Sounds like my Mom
Even though it's been 10 years since his death she has no interest in finding another man.
One of her excuses is "At my age if I find a man, more than likely he won't be in good health and I'm NOT going to spend the rest of my life taking care of some old sick man!"

:hi: I think that is horse hockey. I think people either stay together or there are insurmountable problems that tear them apart. Some marry when things are good...and can't handle it when they go bad. A recent study came out saying that those who marry in their mid twenties are more likely to stay together. I think it's a matter of good matching, hard work and other things.

I've been with MrG for 13 years, known him for 24 and married for 9. :hi:

Mom told me later she probably would have divorced him eventually if he had not passed away. She didn't wish him dead or anything; they just had a very miserable marriage in many ways, and I think that by the time he became ill, she had been thinking of divorce.

33. Don't think it's that easy
My parents have been happily married for over 40 years - tnrough good times and bad times.

Sometimes very bad times....

Meanwhile I'm divorced (7 years of marriage) and gay (the longest I've been able to stay with another man was 5 years).

But I'm not sure longevity is the neasure of a relationship.... perhaps it's intensity. I've never quit loving the people I've loved, I don't think you can. But things change and needs must.

Khash.

34. They divorced when I was 4
They got married when my mother was pregnant with me. I have been married for five years. The events of their divorce and the aftermath did cause a lot of trauma in my childhood. Maybe, it would have been traumatic too if they stayed together. At least I wouldn't have had to deal with parent's transient SOs, an abusive step father, a step mother who seemed jealous of us, moving a lot, and all the issues of relaying messages between parents. I think this all has made it hard for me to deal with relationship issues. On the otherhand, I am motivated to be better than my parents and stay married. Perhaps, people with fewer issues with their divorced parents do alright though.

36. 42 years until my father died
My parents were married 42 yrs. until my father died this summer. They were very happy together.

It's a mixed blessing. On one hand, I know good relationships exist, and I could never be a man-hater. On the other hand, I've never been married because I judge my mediocre relationships against an incredibly solid one. I think I needed to see a happy medium.

Their marriage was pure hell sometimes...for us and them. But they decided to stay together, and I don't know if I'm better or worse for it.

I think it's wisest not to pay too much attention to statistics, but to listen deeply to your own heart and your own mind before making the decision to stick with it or call it quits and move on.

They married in '48. They were best friends. My mom died in 1973 and never got to see Nixon resign. My dad never remarried. She was his one love. (of course, I don't really think anybody else would have put up with him :) ) He died in 1998. We scattered their ashes (along with those of my little brother who died of AIDS in 1997) in the Sangre de Christo mountains of New Mexico.

If your parents divorce and remarry and you never know it, maybe it wasn't all that big a deal.

Of their 4 kids:

Child #4 is twice divorced, single for 11 years
Child #3 is divorced once, is now married 20 years
Child #2 is divorced three times, probably married again; I don't know
Child #1 is married once, still married after 25 years, as far as I know.
