woodstove owners...question for you

I had my woodstive cleaned this summer. I will use it a lot this winter. I've seen these logs sold that you burn when the stove is hot and it is supposed to clean out the kreasote(sp?) in your pipe. Are they worth using? When? Thanks.

1. Run like hell from those damn things

Back when I was a firefighter, those damn things were notorious for starting chimney fires. They burn hot, yes, and get rid of the creosote deposits alright, by setting the deposits on fire and shooting sparks right up your chimney onto your roof. In addition, there is a distinct possiblity, especially if your chimmney is a single wall pipe, that they will over heat and either singe or actually ignite in the area where your stove pipe goes through your ceiling.

Just clean out your chimmney on at least a yearly basis, don't throw a lot of weird crap in the stove to burn(like cardboard or those damn logs) and you will be fine.
