...I think they should just abolish Congress and hold votes via the web.

The whole point of "democracy" is supposed to be "the majority rules" (or, all the major coalitions rule). Sneaking around in the wee hours holding votes isn't democracy. If this is how Congress works, then I think it's time replace it with something more open and transparent.

1. We aren't a democracy, we're a republic.
And there's good reason for that. If not for our republican government (the format, not the party), the US might well have nuked the Taliban after 9/11. People in this nation were enraged and the press was still reporting 20,000+ casualties. Only the fact that we have a deliberative form of government prevented us from doing something incredibly stupid.

Direct democracy is mob rule, and for all practical purposes means that the majority gets its way every time. Minorities and dissidents would have no recourse in that form of government.
