I'm kind of nervous, but very excited. It was really interesting to read all the different perspectives of these places I've never been before, and routes I've never taken. I know it will be very helpful.

I have a cousin somewhere around Santa Barbara--or she was around there about 5 years ago. I'm going to try to find her number while I'm in the area and see if I can track her down.

I've been so busy at work, I hadn't really though about the possibility of seeing her before tonight.

She's about 10 years younger than I am. Maybe, 12--I honestly am not sure. We were close for a short time when she was a little girl, then the family sort of got pulled apart. We still have a bond, but we're both such recluses. No one else in the family ever has our phone numbers.

Anyway, I'll let you know if I found her when I get back.

Please wish us a safe trip. It's kind of a big deal that I'm planning a driving trip. I really just want to see California and have fun. That's my motivation. I really don't want to entertain my anxieties. But, you know, cars are dangerous--and I'm afraid.

15. One good tip about driving in CA

Just hang in the right lane if you're at all nervous about driving here. Also, on many two-lane roads there are turnouts so that you can get out of the way to let faster traffic pass you. The liberal use of turnouts and hanging in the right lane will take a lot of the pressure off so that you can relax and enjoy the drive. This is especially handy on windy roads like Hwy 1, where you want to be able to take it slow and see the coast. There are some folks who will be in a hurry, just get out of their way and you'll have more fun. :)
