I want to scream, ELO has sold out.
"It's a Living Thing" was used in a JC Penney Christmas ad.
"...It's a giving thing..." :puke:

2. Ummm, I doubt ELO even exists anymore.
Whoever owns the rights to their music sold that song to JC Penney, apparently. But ELO hasn't exactly been active musically for a rather long time now, have they? Besides, they sold out with that godawful disco album back in 1982, or thereabouts.

12. Jeff Lynne has never produced a U2 album, thank God!
After what he did to the two "new" Beatles songs on the Anthology records, I don't think I could stand him destroying U2.

However Lynne was busy in the early 90's with the Travelling Wilbury's and a few solo albums from the members of that band (Tom Petty, George Harrison, etc.) Somehow those records managed to survive his production.

10. Jeff Lynne owns the ELO trademark and songbook.
Did Led Zeppelin sell out by allowing GM to make Cadillac commercials with "Rock And Roll" as the soundtrack?

The key test of the ELO concept was marketability. Could a rock band fuse classical components into rock music and sell records? That was the test. In 1972, that meant glam and progressive. In 1978, that meant disco. In 1981, that meant New Wave.

In 2002, it means whatever Jeff says it means. That's when he released Zoom as an ELO album, although it was mostly Jeff and assorted guest musicians, including surviving Beatles Ringo Starr and George Harrison. I recommend Zoom highly, if for no other reason than to hear Jeff Lynne realize his lifelong dream of making a record with the Beatles.

22. Well, as along-time fan, I still say
doing a disco album was selling out as well as cashing-in. They had a sound that many people loved, and there was no need for them to abandon their prior audience to participate in a short-lived craze for the sake of a few bucks. Maybe if they'd stayed with what they'd been doing, they'd be one of those honored old grandpa bands these days.

4. Jeff Lynne *invented* "sold out"

:eyes:

Has to be about the most commercially-driven entity in music. At least in the top 10.

6. Seriously.
Practically the whole reason ELO came into existence was that the Move weren't making money. :eyes:

24. I SAW that tour
Bev Bevan as Vinnie Appice/Bill Ward was cool, but Ian Gillan as Ronnie James Dio/Ozzy Osbourne was EVEN COOLER! They did a decent version of "Smoke On The Water", believe it or not.

16. I would have used the word "pussy" for broader comprehension,
but you can't say "pussy" on DU.

Generally, I prefer the word "poon" because of the down-home barnyard crudity of its sound. And because of the shape a mouth forms when uttering the word.

13. The Move had several top ten records in the UK.
They never made much headway in the USA, though. The deal was, Roy Wood had the original idea for ELO, but Jeff Lynne was much better at the implementation. If you listen to the first album (No Answer), you'll find that the songs written by Lynne were miles better than the ones written by Wood. So Wood basically tossed the keys to ELO to Lynne and went on his merry way.

Is there ANYONE more commercial and sold out than KISS? I think not.

15. What HAVEN'T "The Who" sold out to?
Commercials for cars, prescription drugs, and God knows what else. Fucking CBS TV shows, and the worst sell-out of all is the mere fact that they continue to use the name "The Who" without Moon & Entwistle.

Roy Wood, who quit ELO, released an answer song entitled "Bend Over Beethoven."
