Poll question: I've just put 5 people on my "Ignore" list. Should I feel guilty?
They're the only 5 people I've EVER had on my "Ignore" list...and my (lapsed) Catholic guilt is ALREADY emerging. I like people you know, but these peoples' posts just plain IRRITATE me with their utter silliness. I've not told any of them that they're on "Ignore" because, well I'm a chicken...I can admit.

Should I feel guilty, or should I just brush it off?

5. Don't let it worry you too much.....
If you decide you don't want them on ignore, then you can very easily take them off!

I put someone on ignore once long ago, and then I discovered that even though that person had irritated me, I still wanted to know what that person was saying......so....the ignore was reversed.

And I was fine, too.....

12. I have 599 people on ignore.
The way I look at it is this: I am here to accomplish certain things, and have already been selective in what I give my attention to by going to here rather than, say, Free Republic. I am honing my attention further with the ignore button.

I'm going to bed now, so I won't be around to answer peoples' requests about whether or not they're on ignore, which I generally don't answer anyways.

It's an online discussion board, and sometimes verbal mistakes happen, but that doesn't make anyone here a bad person.

14. I don't get it either
In fact, I don't even know what it's like to look at a page with someone on ignore. It's got to be a potential mess, because it seems to me there will be responses to that person's posts, but you can't see the original so how the hell can you accurately gage context? Especially since this isn't a message board with quoted text included in the posts.

Putting someone on ignore is essentially a blanket prediction that the future opinions or information will somehow do you more harm if they're present. Not just neutral or irrelevant, but to your detriment. I'm a handicapper but I don't pretend to be able to predict opinions, especially with a myriad of forums and potential topics. The entire concept seems very weak to me.

15. A temporary ignore can be useful for me. I don't use it often, but I'm apt
to lose my temper a lot easier these days. If I'm about to go postal and say something that I can't (technically won't, because if I say it, I mean it) retract, I put them on ignore for a couple of days until I can get myself under control.

OTOH I have no one on ignore, nor have I ever had a deleted post (been here 9 months or so); I usually stay out of flame wars and vanity threads, and always think twice before hitting 'post'; sometimes, it really helps to convey a friendly / neutral tone, using this :-)

the ignore button is there for a reason, it's not a big deal, and is actually to be encouraged if it makes your experience here better.

On a personal note... I've never had the self control to keep anybody on ignore. Back during the Presidential primaries I tried several times to use it, and just couldn't get over my curiousity when I saw that an ignored member was posting.

The ignore feature is one of the best (and most underutilized, I think) tools around. If someone bugged the crap out of me in real life, I'd rather ignore them than keep putting myself in situations where I have to see or hear them constantly.

I never cease to be amazed at how personal message boards can get for people. I'm guilty of allowing things here bother me more than they should from time to time myself. I can't ignore anyone as a mod, but I do know when it is time to take a break.

The ignore feature is great, but people should just use it and be quiet about it. If you're grandstanding about putting people on ignore, you're probably more of a jerk than they are.

27. Do what ya gotta do to get along.
Been registered for over 18 months and only 1 person has made my ignore list. Sometimes what certain people have to say just un nerves you to the point it is almost a have to just for personal sanity.

The 1 person i ignored just seemed to be everywhere! Seemed to have to chime in on every thread, and did so whining. It got on my nerves pretty bad, so now so and so is on ignore. Which in turn has made my viewing much more pleasurable.

so much have developed into 3 different threads, all by you, all about the exact same thing. I would hate to see you in a real crisis, because you can't seem to function when faced with others' ideas.

The Lounge is not a "place"; it's a forum. I've seen a lot of wonderful, thoughtful material in here along with the silliness. I have no idea what you're talking about when you say it's "turned into" something. Everyone has told you about the "hide thread" feature. One click and you're there.

You may as well go ahead and add me to your "ignore" list as well.
And please don't feel guilty about it.

That's my opinion. If you're going to do it, then do it in silence. Otherwise, you're just starting shit.

Putting people on ignore is fine. That is your choice. That is why there is an ignore function. But why start a thread about it? Makes absolutely no sense to me.

54. I have to say this.
Sometimes I sort by author so I can find certain peoples posts. And your name is the first one that comes up when you sort the lounge by author, so all your threads are together.

When you look at all your threads together its pretty obvious that you dont like the lounge, the people in the lounge, or the subject matters in the lounge because basically all you do is complain about it. Yeah I dont like everything in here but you dont hear me complaining about it mainly because Im not a dude that complains much, but also because I figure if I dont like a particular place here on DU theres a whole bunch of other places to go instead.

So my question to you is are you just trying to rile people up and start controversy? And why do you still come to the lounge? Not trying to be rude, its just curiosity.

63. here's how
at the top of each board, there's a black bar, something like "Discussion Topic", "Author", "Date", etc, above each column of the board...if you click where it says "Author", it will re-sort the threads by author instead of most recent or whatever. Hope that helps. :)

70. Your statement is factually inaccurate (if you used the Search Function)
Edited on Mon Nov-14-05 05:33 PM by ...of J.Temperance
I've ONLY done some complaining like this since LAST night.

It's not OBVIOUS that I don't like people in the Lounge or the subject matters...you look at ALL of my posts together and state that I dislike EVERYBODY and ALL I do is complain.

If you want to know, I consider 96% of the people here as pretty good sorts.

I've only been on a big complaining thing since last night, so what are you going on about?

Four people isn't ALL of the people...and I don't dislike the four, not as in the defination of the word dislike.

I've been getting along here fine for the majority of the time.

No, I'm not trying to rile people up. I've never actually seen one of your posts here, this is the first post of yours I've seen...I'll have to check your other posts out and then think about making factually inaccurate statements about your posts as a WHOLE.

Then again, I might not, I might just let it go, because at heart I'm a softy.

On Edit: If you actually were able to use the Search Function, then you could get ALL of my posts from the Lounge, EVERY SINGLE one of them. You could read through them, and IF you did, what you'd find is THIS, THESE are factual statements:

ALL of my posts have been JOVIAL and GOOD-NATURED...ALL OF THEM.

EXCEPT a section of posts that STARTED LAST NIGHT, when I first started to complain about this stuff. The COMPLAINING posts began LAST NIGHT.

ALL posts PRIOR to last night have been jovial and good-natured. Which is something you'd know, if you used the Search Function.

95% of my posts have been nice and I've been friendly to the majority of the posters in the Lounge, and that IS a factual statement.

71. I haven't looked at all of your posts, nor have I had the
slightest desire to after seeing your proclamations, polls, threats to leave, solopsistic and juvenile cloak-and-dagger utterances, accusations of thread hijacking (which is encouraged in the spirit of fun in the Lounge) and lastly, your assumption that someone out there gives a rat's.

So let's break it down:

"I'm going to leave I think, I've HAD to put four people on "Ignore"

I realize you have "facts", "statistics", and "percentages" at your fingertips. Good organization. Don't get me wrong; I'm not begging you to stay.

You know as well as we do that there's a search function. You're essentially calling DUers out. And again, with the fatal assumption that we give a rat's.

"The same four people are getting too much, two of them even HIJACKED a really good thread I had going, there were LOTS of interesting responses on the subject and THEN these two turn up and hijack it with their stuff, at least 16 responses between each other, and one of them even admitted in one of their responses "this has got nothing to do with the OP question" or something like that, and yet the two of them just carried on."

"I had to LEAVE my OWN thread because of these two...and I never went back to see what the other people had responded to my original question. These two just RUINED the ENTIRE thread with their little thing."

Nobody ever knows the direction any given thread will take. There's a "factual statement" for you.

"I like people you know, but these peoples' posts just plain IRRITATE me with their utter silliness. I've not told any of them that they're on "Ignore" because, well I'm a chicken...I can admit.

Should I feel guilty, or should I just brush it off?"

And the worst- you actually made this into a poll about whether or not you should feel guilty about it. Every other autonomous being on this board would not feel compelled to ask such a question unless they were screaming about the injustice of it all. You just want to hear validation. If you pay attention you'll find out that you're irritating.

133. All the world's a stage
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

And back to the topic at hand, I hate spinach, but when I go through a cafeteria line, I never have to cover my eyes as I pass that container. I find the whole concept of IGNORE kind of lame, and telling someone you're ignoring them one step above holding one's breath and stomping one's feet.
