How many of you still can't type?
My young nephew was in town visiting and used my computer to check his emails. It took him forever just to answer a couple. He can't type! He hunts and pecks!

I learned how to type 44 years ago, so I just assumed all young people today could type. He is only 35.

14. It is where *I'm* from...
Graduated from HS a couple of years ago (KY). REQUIRED to take a full *YEAR* of Keyboarding to graduate. (Of course, I'm a techie, so if it was a class involving computers, I was there)

2. I can type fast.
For me, the question is, "How many of you can still write by hand?" Since I am always in front of a computer typing, I hardly ever write by hand anymore, and I now find it difficult to write by hand. I think this is very sad.

10. I have the same problem!
I can type just fine, but I find it hard to write. I used to have great penmanship when I was younger and now it sucks. It really is sad, just like you say!

I think I'm gonna practice getting my writing back. Most of the problem with writing is that we try to write as fast as we type...I think.

3. I learned how to type in high school, didn't use it that much and was
pretty slow when I first got on the internet(s). My typing speed has vastly improved as a result. My sons, 33 and 28, however put me to shame, and they never took typing in school.

4. I type fine, I just don't use the asdf jkl; method.
I use the two fingers and a thumb method. I know where all the keys are without looking.

5. It depends. I taught 4th & 5th grade computer classes wherein typing
was part of the curriculum.

I taught myself how to type on aan old Royal typewriter when I was 11 and took a typing class in high school.

You can learn if you are motivated and have a good typing exercise book.

6. I took typing in junior high, but
only for fun and a good grade.

In hindsight, with computers and all, it was a very wise and timely career move.

9. I took it in high school
back in 1979, but I totally suck at it. I type with both hands and know where the letters are, but I can't type w/out looking. My 15 y.o. is a whiz who puts me to shame and so is my husband.
I have to look, what can I say? Oh yeah, asdfjkl; - that's the only thing I remember about typing class.

11. I also took it in high school
I think there were only three guys in the class. Boy did I catch hell at football practice for taking typing. Now I laugh at all my old friends trying to type on their computers. BTW, I can still do close to 60 WPM on a good day. Not as fast now that I'm nearing 60, but it's good enough for computer use.

12. The most useful class that I ever took in high school. I used to
make money in college typing papers for other students. I also took beer as payment.

16. Everybody I work with makes fun of me....
I'm a pretty big guy, with some pretty big meat-hooks.
How big?
I can palm a basketball, that's how big.

I TORTURE a keyboard.
Just destroy them.
BEAT them into submission.

I'm very heavy handed.
And when I am writing something where I know what I want to say, I can flat out crank.
Forty to eighty wpm is typical cruising speed for me.

Plus, I'm a stream of consciousness type of a writer.
I get what I want to say down, and then I go back and fix any errors or mis-spellings later on.

I'm not so concerned about people not knowing how to type.
I am concerned that they do not know how to construct a decent sentence.
I work with guys that have degrees, and they can't send me an e-mail that doesn't require a secret de-coder ring.

And I have excellent penmanship, or so I am told.
Very modern, yet somehow art-deco like.

Pretty much, I rule.

17. My kids learned to type in school.
I learned on typewriters.

I have to agree with the people who said their handwriting declined with the rise of computers. That happened to me, too. Thank goodness it's still easier to draw with pencil and paper.

19. ZombieNixon teaches typing:
Rules:

though = thought
thge = teh = the
an = adn = nad = dan = and

Using "s" to mark a past participle and "d" to mark a plural is completely acceptable (as in "the two coupled walkes side by side."

NOTE: that last habit of mine has gotten so bad that I actually confuse S and D when I'm writing on paper! :D

21. I learned to type WAY back when...early 60's
in high school, on a manual Royal typewriter with no characters on the keys. You had to look at a chart on the wall for key placement; looking at the keyboard did you no good! I've always been a great typist, and I love it. I think typing and the ability to take shorthand kept me out of combat in Vietnam (plus a TOP SECRET clearance!)

23. Hey, typing may have kept me out of Vietnam
After basic training, the Army sent me to Washington on an OJT assignment. After 90 days they gave me a permanent slot on Ft Meyer in Arlington. Spent the rest of my 2-year Army hitch there. Use to jog in Arlington Cemetery.
