Today, November 11, 1911 was my father's birthday -- (Photo of our family)
Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 05:23 PM by Radio_Lady
He's been gone since 1988.

In his memory, I'm posting this photo of our little Florida family, Mom, Dad, and me in the 1940s. I remember the day this photo was taken. (Don't you just love the fakey palm tree background?)

He wasn't a veteran (got rated 4-F for bad feet), but I try to remember the good times. He was an interesting, but flawed human being -- magnetic and sexy, but full of rages. I inherited my writing and speaking ability from him. Dad, I hardly knew you, and wasn't around in the last years. You still remind me of Clark Gable, and you were a lawyer, inventor, politician, violinist, sculptor and painter. I think I'm one of your better works, too! I wish you had lived a little longer.

1. My grandmother's b-day was today, too, in 1915
She would have been 90 years old today. She passed away on Thanksgiving day in 1996.

7. Were you close to your grandmother? My father's mother died in
childbirth when he was five. He was raised by his stepmother who was his mother's younger sister. She was in Pittsburgh while I lived in Florida; my mother's mother lived in Pittsburgh, and then Los Angeles, CA. This was all before plane travel, so I didn't know either of them very well.

I'm trying to make up for this with my own grandchildren.

12. My grandparents practically raised me
I was very very close to my grandmother. I was their first grandchild, and I was her favorite. She was sickly as a child, and had rheumatoid arthritis most of the time I knew her. When she lost more and more of her abilities, I would drive her around and help take care of her.

My mother divorced my dad when I was 4, and her parents were like second parents to me. My grandfather paid off our mortgage so my mother (a substitute Spanish teacher at the time) could keep us in the same house.

I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, as my mom spent much of my childhood working and going back to school to get her masters. My grandparents also paid for most of my college education.

Your own grandchildren will appreciate you, for sure. I still think of my grandmother every day, and I miss her dearly. It's hard to believe it's been nine years already, though.

9. Right. That can only happen twelve times early in each century.
I always thought it was a good thing, numerologically, at least.

01/01/01
02/02/02
03/03/03
04/04/04
05/05/05
06/06/06
07/07/07
08/08/08
09/09/09
10/10/10
11/11/11
12/12/12

Anyone know any person who has these birthdays in the early part of THIS CENTURY?

11. She was beautiful, but she had a heavy burden dealing with us.
Dad was probably an undiagnosed manic depressive. They married in 1938, when my mother was just a teenager and in college. I was born one year and one month later. She never went back to school and regretted it all her life. She wanted to be a journalist; she died alone in 1991 at age 71. She certainly deserved more out of life.

15. I have another picture of him in college. You're absolutely right --
and he would have appreciated any of these comparisons.

Surgery went well -- had a little pain this morning, but got through it with one prescribed painkiller.

Here's the thread from last night, if you're at all curious.

Thanks, StraightShooter. So, you're in Oregon, too? Sorry about your bank problems today. I think that Veteran's Day is celebrated more in the East; it's considered a national holiday, but as far as I could tell from the traffic tonight, not too many people got the day off.

In peace,

Radio_Lady in Oregon

18. "Today's drugs are better 'n ever." LOL.
Oh, actually I don't have bank problems, but it did take a while to get used to a bank that doesn't open on Saturdays and closes every chance it gets. They're just so doggone nice, though.

I love that photo of you and your mom and dad. Thanks for sharing. :)

And if that is you in the inset thumbnail, you are as beautiful as your parents. Thanks for the trip in time.

19. DUers, you are very kind. My mom was born on November 9, 1919.
11/09/19 married to 11/11/11.
So sweet -- two Scorpios together in life and death.

My daughter's in-laws were both born on November 3rd. They're very different, but married for almost fifty years.

22. How ironic....
My sister and father were both born November 3.

Your parents were a very good-looking couple. I'd say Errol Flynn.

And your parents look so debonair! What a classy era.

You look almost exactly-- hair, face-- like childhood pictures of one of my mother's younger cousins, who's probably about your age.
