When was the largest single gathering in American history?
For any reason. Religion, sports, marches, concerts, etc.

Woodstock? I'm asking.

3. US Concerts?
I would be willing to bet that it was some sort of religous thing that you have never heard of.

12. In LA, we have the "Harvest Festival"...
It's the single largest gathering of fundies in California every year.

I think last year the attendance was somewhere in the 60 - 70,000 range.

11. Come to think of it.......
Maybe it was Pope JP2 in Grant Park? Estimated at well over 1M.

Even some July 4th fireworks on the Lakefront attract over a million.

Woodstock was less than 500K.

I've done a little research and the Million Man March and Woodstock are tied at around 400K.

Seems like more people participated in HAA.

14. I think it was here on DU that I read about the largest gathering
in human history. It was a religious festival in India in 1987 or thereabouts. Something like seventy million people gathered in one place. Anyone have the dope on that?

20. It's easily the biggest number so far........but..........
It is really a 'gathering' if it's stretched 3000 miles, and there were lots of breaks in the chain...some of them hundreds of miles long?

I dunno.

The biggest number I can come up with is the estimated 1.2 million in Chicago's Grant Park to celebrate a Mass with Pope JP2.
