My dog was mauled by another
I had contractors over this morning and crated the two foster dogs in the basement. My forever-friend, Belle, was loose in the house and the contractors said they wouldn't come in -- against policy. Belle hates to be crated, so I took her out back and put her on the run. I came back inside to show the contractors what we wanted done.

Maybe 10 minutes later I heard the barking and growling by the time I made it out back Belle was corned between the house and the fence and the other dog was on her. I threw the kid's playhouse on the dogs to break up the fight but it didn't work. One of the contractors had come out and was trying to help me pull the other dog of mine -- he/she would not let go. The contractor finally pulled a tool from his belt and came down hard on the other dog's head and he released... and wanted to kill us. We pulled the playhouse between us and the dog while I tried to tend to Belle.

Her stomach was completely ripped open -- puncture wounds on her chest -- and I don't really know what else. The police came and took the other dog away and I raced Belle to the vet. She's still alive & I know she's a strong girl, but this is really bad. The vet told me not to expect to hear anything for at least a few hours.

She and I were supposed to do our first herding trial this Sunday.

3. Oh no! That sounds horrific! I hope Belle is okay!
I really feel bad for you. Whose dog was it that did this?

8. No
I'll leave that to the police. It's my understanding that the other dog has already been put down and had nothing to identify it -- tags/collar/chip/tattoo.

9. So do you think the contractors accidentally let the dog
get in?

11. The dog must have come over the fence
We have a short one back there, only about 3 feet high, which is why I also keep the dogs on a run instead of just letting them run free.

Belle is a smaller dog (cocker/sheltie) -- roughly about 25 pounds. The other dog was quite large. If I had to guess, I'd say it was at least part Spinone... or maybe Wolfhound... I'm not sure, he looked like a huge Benji.

5. Oh my God!
I certainly hope Belle is okay. What an odd thing, though. The stomach injury suggests that she rolled over and submitted. Most dogs won't normally continue to go after another if they've given up.

Do you know where the other dog came from?

I'm very sorry!

10. wow. That is unbelievable.
this other dog was a stray that came over a fence? Pulling a dog off another sounds dangerous to me. I probably would try a kick to the groin, or jumping on its legs first. I hit a rottweiler on the head twice as hard as I could with a pool cue and it was unphazed. Fortunately, I guess it was a nice dog, because I do not think I could have stopped it. It finally backed off an whined a little when I hit it in the back.

It sounds like you were dealing with a dog that was starving, rabid, or trained in dog fighting.

13. How horrible. Poor little doggie. Did the dog who attack her get away?
I think you should call animal control, that dog sounds very dangerous.

14. hugs to you and Belle
I think the dog that has been put down should tested for rabies.

I assume Belle is probably vaccinated, but it's possible she was not his only victim.
