Every human emotion doesn't have to be expressed in
a Whitney Houston-style, feel-good, crappy-ass song with five thousand "runs" in it.

Know what I mean?

Sometimes you just wish for originality in the world.

That's all.

1. Just when I was gonna write a poppy little ditty
about ambivalence, you throw a buzzkiller like that at me.

Dammit.

2. I've heard the runs called
curlie cues and I think it is time they went out of style. These women SCREAM they don't sing.

Sometimes less is better. Like Dido and Norah Jones and Sarah McLachlan.

5. Can you really get more appropriate than calling them "the runs"?

6. Sarah McLachlan may not scream, but she sure does...
...yodel.

You know, the trick she stole from Sinead O'Connor.

20. Yeah, she does...It's true
I actually only like a couple of hers, mostly Angel.

I think the yodeling is an Irish thing or something. The Cranberries do it, too.

4. Thank you, guys, for getting what I was talking about.
I was getting worried, LOL.

I hate the "curlie cue" style of singing. Either SING or DON'T, but stop all that taking one note and running it up and down the frigging scale for five minutes shit.

8. I didn't know what..
.... you meant at first, but now I do. Every wannabee on American Idol is singing that crap, which I guess nowadays passes for vocal expressiveness.

It is to vocal expressiveness what crayons are to fine art :)

7. The saddest part is
that Whitney Houston and (for some reason, this lady comes to mind) Mariah Carey have amazing voices in the first place, voices that don't need the practice-trill-gimmick thing.

11. It's like everything else in America...
... they are dumbing it down for the masses, who wouldn't know a soulful vocal expression if it sang up their asses.

12. But Bouncy!! I believe the Children are our Future!! Teach them well...
....and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I will live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Chorus:
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

And I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I will live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Chorus:
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

the theme from Titanic is worse.

Hell, anyone can write lyrics that rhyme when every line ends in "on".

19. That is the most inane
song ever written. It moves from one platitude to another, and none of it relates to any of the rest of it! Kind of like America today, I guess! Nah, maybe not. I'm cranky because I haven't had my coffee yet.

14. I just don't understand why they do that.
If you have a REAL voice and lung capacity and have been TRAINED properly, you do not need to do that or really want to. I hate it with a passion...but maybe that comes from being raised on church music.Dunno, but I hate it. Either ppl with real talent do it because they have to, or people with no talent do it to cover up the fact that they can't sing.
I can let it go with Whitney because she does not seem to do it to excess (at least on the older stuff) and same with Mariah; her older stuff featured it a bit, but with restraint.

18. I know what you mean
that reminds me of that Whitney Houston song about originality ...

Wait a minute, has somebody else told that joke?

I have a two CD set of Whitney's greatest hits, and I put a little note in it. It says "never listen to this again". Just in case I forget how bad it is. I would love to listen to some of her songs, like "Oh I wanna dance with somebody ... with somebody who loves me." Unfortunately the CD was done as a dance mix, which might be okay, but it is like they all have the same mix. So when you listen to the CD it is like "lumpa lumpa lumpa lumpa" for about an hour. Even in songs that are supposed to be ballads. It gets very annoying after about two songs.

22. OMG
I have FOUND MY PEOPLE.

I despise this kind of music. I think Celine Dionne ought to be imprisoned for what she did to what was basically a lovely lyric piece like "My Heart Will Go On," turning it into a shrieking mess.
