My dog isn't invited to Thanksgiving this year
Just got the invite from the inlaws for Thanksgiving to stay over two nights. No room for the dog. Relatives don't want him. Have to kennel him. Have to stay with them. Truth be told I would rather spend Thanksgiving with him in the kennel than with the relatives.

1. Half of my relatives are allergic to my dogs.
But luckily I have friends who will care for them while I'm gone so I don't have to kennel them.

2. Can't you just decline the offer, and have your own Thanksgiving?
:)

4. He should be the one to decline then

We were lucky..too far to travel easily.. After the first year we were married, we rarely, if ever, went home for the holidays. We considered our own kids and our cliose friends to be more family than the ones we left behind.

We hosted every holidaym and all were welcome, though :)

5. Can you afford to get a hotel room?
One that will allow you to bring your pet? That way, you won't have to leave him for a long period of time.

That's what I do when I go visit my persnickety relatives in Texas. Indeed, they have asked me to come visit since the hurricane (they took a dead on hit from Rita) but there are no hotel rooms available, and I'm not going until the hotels are back up and running.

9. I hate it for you.
If I lived nearby, I'd offer to keep your little guy while you're gone. :(

10. What a sweety you are!!
I love this dog soooo much. I know if I go... I am going to worry about him being in the kennel. This visit is to celebrate the birth of another nephew.... but the family hasn't given a shit about the other eight that were born...it is all for theater...And funny I am always the only one that appears to give a shit. Sigh///

By the way, I feel for you, hatredisnotavirtue. If my dogs can't come along, I seriously consider not going.

13. Have you ever kenneled your pup before?
Check around, ask around. Some kennels are really great--they schedule play time for their guests and really pay attention to them. I used to travel a lot when I had dogs and would take them to a kennel that did things like that, and for a bit extra, would schedule *storytime* for them--literally, get into the kennel with them and read them stories! When you went to pick up your baby, you'd get a "report card" detailing all the activities they participated in while you were away. It was almost as good as leaving them at home. Except, they were surrounded by other dogs who barked their heads off. By the time I got them back home, they were exhausted from doing the same.

Two days out of the year. I know it sucks, but it'll be okay.

14. Your husband puts his sister ahead of you?
Oh, dear.

Do check around in your town. Call the Humane Society, they may know someone who will "foster" your dog for a couple of days. You can pay them a little more than you would the kennel.

Some kennels are just fine, but it's my belief that dogs who are used to being indoors prefer to stay in another home. It's hard enough when you're gone.

Bless your heart. I hope it all works out. You've got time to make the best arrangements.

17. You may have trouble finding a kennel at this late date
Thanksgiving is a very busy time for them. We've had to leave our dogs in kennels several times, and I didn't like doing it. I called the kennel every day! Everything was fine each time, but I didn't like it.

So we usually vacation with our families separately while the other person stays home with the pooches.

19. I'd choose the dog...
Tell the in-laws you couldn't find anyone to dog sit, buy a nice stuffing chicken and share it with Fido.
