Air conditioner effort may stir resentment

There is no doubt that Frankie Mayo's campaign to send air conditioners to the troops in Iraq will be wildly successful and do much to boost morale. Still, will we be able to keep this news from the many thousands of Iraqi people who still lack electricity and water? A sergeant's description of the 300th Military Police Company quarters did sound relatively plush, "with all the hot water you want."

Could this effort to comfort cause the war to be prolonged as anti-American sentiment and attacks continue? We need forethought to our actions, however well-intended.

Instead of donating to this worthy cause, I will send $100 to Pacem in Terris, which sponsored an excellent talk recently by political analyst and author William Rivers Pitt.

1. So where are the troops in Iraq going to get the electricity ...
...to run those air conditioners? Is the answer that they are the ones getting the electricity, while the Iraqi people are not? Same with the water.

2. Here's the original story

Personally, those AC would be wonderful donation right here in America where excessive heat can be very dangerous for elderly people. Why not make a military twist and make those donations (plus some money towards their bill) to retired veterans who need the help?

3. I piggy back that idea!!!!!!
Every summer, elderly veterans die from heat exhaustion....as do other low socioecconomic class elederly. Hell, some nursing homes lack air conditioners. They use fans which blow bacteria all about the place too.

Don't get me started!!!!!!

If the military can't handle the heat then lets bring them home.

Oh, where are all those lavish quarters we saw at the start of this ....f-cking war?

Oh, don't get me started......

4. Another good letter on that page
Media wasn't alert before the Iraq war

I am glad we got rid of a horrible dictator to save the ordinary people of Iraq. I have been disappointed that the media wasn't more forceful in looking into the reasons President Bush gave us for a preemptive strike. When I heard him ask whether we want a mushroom cloud to reach the America because Iraq is seeking uranium for nuclear weapons, I couldn't see how Iraq had the capability to do that but Bush certainly indicated it could attack us any moment.

As I listened to his speech announcing we were going to war, I was appalled that he mentioned 9/11 several times, causing many to think Iraq was responsible for the horrible incident in New York.

I knew this had to be hyped up. After all, if he had said we needed a preemptive strike because we must topple a horrible dictator, he wouldn't have gotten much support. Now it seems this hype of the war may have legs. I hope that Bush takes responsibility for all this.

How could Iraq have been an imminent threat when we haven't found any weapons of mass destruction? It is a shame that the media didn't do their job of being our watchdogs before the war and ask tough questions about the proof Bush had. Perhaps now they will.
