8. Nope. Never felt the slightest interest in doing so.
And not for lack of opportunity, either. In my younger days, I was in a theatre group which had several gay memmbers and they asked me if I'd be interested in a date and I answered, with complete honesty, that I simply had no desire or even curiosity about a relationship with other men.

Maybe I'm projecting my own experience on othere, but my own personal deep-seated heterosexuality is one of the main reasons that I find it almost impossible to comprehend that a person's sexual orientation could be a choice. I don't have the slightest idea how I would go about changing myself to feel attracted to another man because I've been straight from day one. From everything I've heard, it's that way for everyone -- you're either gay or straight from your earliest sexual awareness and there's no changing it.

21. Word up, blackcat
As a heterosexual male, I remember being fascinated with women in bathing suits from early childhood (like 2 to 4 years old), while my first love was for a little redheaded girl in the first grade. There was not a moment in the day that I didn't think about her. It's been one after another ever since.

It's never fully entered my mind to kiss or in any other way "be with" another guy. The thought does absolutely nothing for me.

On the other hand, there were other guys I grew up with that I perceived were "different", also from early childhood. It wasn't until I understood the concepts of gay/straight that I knew why.

I can't believe for one second that sexual preference is something we "decide on". I have shut down many a rightwinger who has argued that homosexuality is a sin and that homosexuals can make a conscious choice to screw people of the opposite sex. I have simply pointed out to them that by their own argument, they themselves must have one time been attracted to the same sex and they just "decided" to like members of the opposite sex; I then ask them to tell me who the person was for whom they had the homosexual hots.

29. Wonderfully put. I always ask these same people
When did you decide to be heterosexual? At what age? Still waiting for the answer. There isn't any, because there is no conscious decision, you are either attracted to opposite or same-sexed individual.

I love how you turn their own argument on them. I am making a note of that one.

30. Hmm. What's wrong with it being a choice?
There's only something wrong with it being a choice if there's something inherently wrong (in your mind) with that choice itself.

50. If it's not a choice, it shuts down the RWer's "sin" issue
It means that your sexual preference is just something you are, not something you choose to have, and it takes ALL of the wind out of the RWers' sails.

52. Yes, I understand what you're saying...
And what I am saying is, why do we give a shit what they think? Why are we trying to argue about sexual preference with bigots?

To me, it's just as valid for someone to say, "I'm gay because I CHOOSE to be gay", as it is for someone to say, "I'm gay because that's the way I'm wired." I don't feel the need to say "But they can't help it!" about gay people because I think it's a perfectly valid lifestyle choice.

Know what I mean?

61. I get what you mean, and although...
I do respect and share your live-and-let-live approach, RWers make a lot of noise and have a lot of pull in our sick, sad society. So if I have an opportunity to make one choke on his/her own rhetoric, I never miss it.

Aside from that, I just don't believe for a second that anyone "chooses" their sexual preference. That's just absurd to me. If someone's sexually ambivalent, then I submit that they were born sexually ambivalent.

62. Maybe there's more than one way to be 'gay'
Like some made a choice, perhaps unknown to their conscious mind, whereas others are literally hardwired that way.

Or maybe some people who think they're gay are actually not, and they come out (no pun intended) believing that they must have just chosen it, 'gone through a phase,' or whatever - maybe they're bisexual. What about bisexuality? Are we all potentially bisexual, even those of us who never know it or do anything to indicate it? Or is it a real choice?

I don't know, but I do suspect that something like human sexuality is so fraught with layered complexity that several routes might lead to any particular behavior or preference.

24. Uh, no...
First of all, if you're making a statement like "it's that way for everyone", you're wrong. Period.

I personally have gone in both directions. I ended up in the straight (but not narrow!) column, but it could have gone either way for a while there.

I'm female. Why do so many more females experiment with their sexuality than men? It can only be because of the societal stigma of being gay for a man. If that stigma didn't exist, just as many men, if not more, as women would experiment with their sexuality.

27. That is an EXCELLENT point
I've always wondered that myself as I know SO many straight women who have had sexual experiences with other women, even if it was only once. And not one of them said it was an unpleasant experience. In fact, quite the opposite. But men seem to be less inclined to experience same-sex affection or passion.

Guys, maybe you can explain this one. Is it socialization? What?

36. I am going to venture
that straight men have same-sex intimacy all the time, but it may not be expressed in an obvious sexual way. It's been in the culture for thousands of years--think of Greece and Rome, the British old boy net, sports society, etc. I've just read a Cicero biography, and it seems that, while he had a fairly loving, sexual relationship with his first wife Terentia, he had more intense relationships with men, including his freedman secretary Tiro and his closest correspondent Atticus. He was also very fond of many young men--he liked to mentor them--whether or not they were on his side politically. I myself tend to have more intimate relations with women in every respect, but many men I know are much closer to other men than to their wives or girlfriends.

I have kissed some great guys, and I'm a great kisser.

Although I enjoy kissing women a little more. I think this is because there are a lot of guys out there who really suck at it, sometimes literally. I haven't dated too many women who were as bad at kissing as some men were.

Hopefully I've taught some men how to kiss better and their ladies are enjoying it!

...that more men at DU haven't kissed other men. Actually, I'm gay but lately I find that at the end of the year I've kissed more straight men (on the lips and on the cheek) than gay men. Maybe it's just where I'm from (Philly) and the places I hang out but there are a surprising number of guys here who aren't that bothered by it. I've even seen men that I know to be straight kiss each other on the lips as a greeting--the way some women do. I've recently met two straight men who've taken to giving me a kiss on the cheek as part of saying goodbye.

48. Philly - the City of Brotherly Love!
Maybe that's what it is. Could some of this kissing action perhaps be a result of ethnic conventions that have survived through generations there?

It's hard to believe that so many heterosexual American men would otherwise generally be secure enough to be (or even want to be) unabashedly kissing one another on the mouths, but it wouldn't be the pddest news to come from out oif the US of late. I sure wouldn't be too excited about some dude coming up and slapping one on my lips - I don't even let female relatives do that (I'm supremely fast at turning the other cheek).

Actually, casting my mind back, I don't know that I've ever been kissed by any male other than perhaps my father, when I was a kid. Maybe I need to get out more.

43. swapping spit
Calling kissing "swapping spit" is enough to turn me off kissing all together. Actually, some people do kiss in such a way that the term "swapping spit" does apply. Those are the types of kissers that I avoid. Allow me to modify the original question a bit and ask if you'd be willing to press your lips to the lips of someone of the same sex? Mouth closed. No tongue. No spit. Just a gentle lips to lips kiss. That is the kind of kiss I usually give (and get) and I think it might make a difference in how a man thinks about the experience of kissing another man. Then again, it might not.

44. Would I be willing? I suppose.
Once again though I just don't have any interest in it, I don't know what good it would accomplish.

It wouldn't mean anything to me, I'm simply not attracted to men in any intimate way.

As to the "swapping spit", I was just being glib.

45. Yes. I have done all manner of things for the now ex-husband,
only to discover that more often than not, I enjoyed it too. It's the "liberal" in me, I'm just open to new experiences. ;)

Don't crowd, ladies, I'm taken.

I have to say that although I do have a limited amount of experience with kissing members of the opposite sex, most of those memories are not particularly pleasant. Once I found my sweetie, man, I never looked back.

66. I'm a queer male who's kissed girls
I have to admit, it was pretty hot. Girls' tongues slink around more. Boys' tongues just try to choke you.

69. I've got a slinky, too
Wouldn't surprise me if at least part of it was that, when I first did that, I had no idea what was going on - just copied the more experienced party, and she sure knew her way around things.

Early and often. Kissing is the best part of sex, IMO.

more passionate by far with a him than a her. Don't know why, that's just the way it is. Damn - wasn't planning on outing myself here, but there you go.

72. Welcome orangecoloredapple
to DU. I think you will find there are no innies or outies here, just good people. Threads like this are thrown onto the board just so we can relax and have fun. Enjoy.....BTW....I prefer kissing my own gender too.
