how do you soothe your sore throat?
the kind that's so nasty and so swollen and so sore that it hurts to swallow anything, let alone food or drink?

and what do you yourself avoid eating/drinking when you have a sore throat?

5. oooh... had one of those special little morphine buttons several years ago
Sublime! My sisters both told me they could see it in my face as it hit my bloodstream about five seconds after I'd push the button. Too bad I don't need another surgery like that one. ;)

9. Suck lozenges
Some of the nastiest tasting ones are very soothing. In addition to Halls, I use Ricola, or Fisherman's Friend when it's really bad. If I'm reverting to my childhood state I'll go for Dr. Smith's cherry lozenges.

I eat nothing but soft rice or bread when I have a sore throat and try to drink fruit juices and avoid coffee, black teas, and dairy or soy milk. Mint tea is sometimes nice.

11. Gargle with warm salt water,
avoid anything with sugar, milk products or alcohol. The milk and sugar will coat your throat with a thin film that will act as an augur plate to culture those nasty little bacteria rather than soothe your pain.

And the alcohol will speed up dehydration.

Drink plenty of water, drink it warm or room temperature.

When you get to feeling improved, herbal tea with a slice of lemon or orange. The acid in the citrus will help cut the phlegm and facilitate the departure of those raging bacteria.

20. Very good advice - all of it!!
The warm salty water gargle is amazingly soothing. After that, the best thing I know is hot tea with lots of lemon and sugar.

:)

22. warm salty water is magic. Simply amazing -- it might sound
gross but it is absolutely the best thing to do, then move on to hot lemon water and lozenges.

Mom's a nurse, dad's a doctor, and the warm salt water gargle was the first thing they'd have me do when my throat got raw and sore.

15. This sounds funky, but it works.
Boil some water, enough for a coffee cup full.
While it's boiling, get some honey, a lemon slice (or lemon drops), some bourbon and some sugar ready.

Pour about 2 tablespoons of bourbon in the cup. Pour the boiling water in the cup. Add the sugar and the honey (about a teaspoon of each) Squeeze the lemon or lemon drops bottle into the mixture to taste. Drink it slowly at first and then when it cools down, drink the rest. Repeat if necessary or if you just wanna get hammered. Enjoy.

17. Hot tea with lemon and honey and
any mentholated cough drop. Also, lidocaine spray if you know a nurse or medic who can get you some.

Try going into the bathroom and sitting on the toilet and running the shower as hot as possible. The steam will make the swelling go down.

Sometimes ice chips will help.

Keep your room humidified and if you have to dip a clean washcloth in hot, hot water and breath through it.

Then get that bad boy tested at the doctor; you might have strep.

LISTEN TO YOUR GRANNIE!

18. Wrap up your neck. Something like a muffler or even an old pillow case
wrapped around your neck. Sleep that way and wear it during the day if necessary. Will clear it up if it is really sore, or if your throat is just scratchy will keep it from getting worse

19. Zinc lozenges are really good for a sore throat.
I haven't read any other posts on this thread yet to see if anyone else has suggested this.

I'm also a big fan of gargling with hot, hot salt water.

Good luck, wishing you a speedy recovery.

23. Fisherman's Friend lozenges...
They'll blow the top of your head off, they're so strong. Have one, and it'll make you say, "Hooooo!" And since I live in Canada (where we're definitely familiar with sore throats), Buckley's Mixture. It tastes awful (kind of like soap with camphor), but it works wonders.

26. Traditional Medicinals "Throat Coat," all the way.
Not a substitute for actual medical care, but it's really helped me with laryngitis, sore throats, other throat "issues." And by that I mean, helped me with soreness.

27. Equal parts whiskey, honey, and lemon juice.

If you don't have honey, Karo syrup is a good substitute. This isn't medical advice, is it?

Edit: Just remembered: Suck on large chewable Vitamin C tabs. The citric acid is very soothing, and the vitamin C will help you get well faster.
