I have a job interview and I need help with writing a writing sample.
Whenever I have had to submit a writing sample for a job listing I have usually tended towards writing a business letter. For instance when writing a sample for a job on the hill I would write a mock letter to a constituent on a bill or a request.

Tonight I received a call to have an interview and I was asked to bring a writing sample. Since this was the first time I have ever been asked for a sample verbally, I took the opportunity to ask if there was a specific subject she was looking for. She replied "something along the lines of policies and procedures, just a few sentences".

So, now I'm sitting here wondering what exactly that entails. I've worked in human resources before and I've seen my share of handbooks, cheat sheets, etc. but I'm really at a loss. I'm more worried about writing something that is not related or not wanted than I am of the actual interview. Are writing samples basically just a chance to show I can complete sentences or are the indicative of something else?

Any ideas/experiences?

1. The writing required for policies and procedures
is usually required to be written in sufficiently simple terms that a wide variety of education levels can comprehend it easily. No flowery language, no showing off your well-developed vocabulary.

Also, it should describe the necessary technicalities thoroughly without being longwinded. The average employee will not read a novella on any subject related to the performance of duties. Say it simply, clearly and as quickly as possible while covering the matter thoroughly.

Good luck.

3. It's usually a chance to show
you can write a sentance.

Hey, you'd be surprised how many can't.

6. My sock puppet was everything
that I am not.

Smart, well liked, witty, dead ringer for Angelina Jolie...

But those days are no more.
