Admit it: You are a closet Rush fan
Sure, you hate on them like the hep happening music snob that you are, but you have a SECRET STASH of Rush tunes on yr. 'puter.

You say Geddy Lee sings like an old lady, then you turn around and pop "Moving Pictures" into the CD player. You call Neil Peart's lyrics pedantic and boring, but then you're playing air guitar to "Spirit of Radio".

Out with it. Admit your forbidden pleasure. Right here.

1. Bullshit. I am a VERY OUT Rush fan.
I think they are one of the top 5 most brilliant rocks bands of all time, up there with Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, and Yes.

People who don't like Rush are people, I think, who don't "get" music in general.

They're fucking geniuses, and their skill level on their instruments, for all three of them, is at the very top echelon of musicians.

I never understood why they were so hated by critics. As you say they're top notch musicians and recorded many excellent albums.

4. Actually
Years ago.... many years ago... I used to work in an office where all the help desk people (inclusive) were liberals. Lunch time rolled around and we would turn on the radio. We listened to Rush. We thought he was a liberal. We thought he was making fun of conservatives because we could not believe that anyone could honestly believe the things he was saying. It finally dawned on us the guy really was that loony.

Sorry. Didn't get it then don't get it now. I was into the Who. Gary was all about having an epiphany at a who concert but Rush was the next great thing. I dumped rock for Leo Kottke and Louden Wainwright. 3 years later I heard this foghorn spouting poetry. Screen door slammed, and Mary's dress waved.

My DU name being one of my favorite albums. I have all of the studio releases (CDs and even a few on vinyl stashed away) and a live album. I've seen 'em 3 times, have some t-shirts, and have read a couple of Neil's books. Love the lyrics, love the music.

36. Not in the closet at all (check the ID).
I LOVE Rush!

The first time I ever heard them, I was about 16 and driving around in my little old beat up car late at night (as teenagers often have as a first vehicle). I was listening to the radio and this song came on. It was the coolest song I had ever heard, and I had to pull over to the side of the road so I could listen to it better. After the song was over, the DJ came back on and said the title: "Tom Sawyer", by Rush.

I went down to the record store a few days later and bought my first Rush album. That was 15 years ago, and they're still my favorite band ever. At least 25% of my IPOD is Rush songs. I've noticed, though, that they are the kind of band people either love with a fierce passion or hate with a fierce passion. You don't meet too many people that feel so-so about Rush.

"An ill wind comes arising
Across the cities of the plain
There's no swimming in the heavy water
No singing in the acid rain
Red alert
Red alert"

51. .......
Sprawling on the fringes of the city
In geometric order
An insulated border
In between the bright lights
And the far unlit unknown

Growing up it all seems so one-sided
Opinions all provided
The future pre-decided
Detached and subdivided
In the mass production zone
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone

(Subdivisions)
In the high school halls
In the shopping malls
Conform or be cast out
(Subdivisions)
In the basement bars
In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out
Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths we drift into the city
The timeless old attraction
Cruising for the action
Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight
Somewhere out of a memory of lighted streets on quiet nights...

I don't listen to them as much now as I did in my younger days, but I still think they're great musicians. I could do without Geddy's voice, and Peart's tributes to Ayn Rand, but those boys could play their instruments. YYZ, anyone?

53. Red Sector A
"Red Sector A"

All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves
Is stay alive...

Ragged lines of ragged grey
Skeletons, they shuffle away
Shouting guards and smoking guns
Will cut down the unlucky ones

I clutch the wire fence
Until my fingers bleed
A wound that will not heal-
A heart that cannot feel-
Hoping that the horror will recede
Hoping that tomorrow-
We'll all be freed

Sickness to insanity
Prayer to profanity
Days and weeks and months go by
Don't feel the hunger-too weak to cry

I hear the sound of gunfire
At the prison gate
Are the liberators here-
Do I hope or do I fear?
For my father and my brother-it's too late
But I must help my mother
Stand up straight...

Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings
To survive?...
