Poll question: Coffe Advice needed...STAT
Ever since I left Germany, I miss good, bold coffees. I just bought 1 pound of Millstone French Roast, but it somehow lacks in freshness and that mouthfeel I am looking for.

So, I am looking for brand-names, roasts, and fineness of grinds to help me find that best coffee taste here in the US.

If you know coffee, I grew up on Dallmayr ProDomo or Tchibo. I have a Krups coffee machine with a metallic filter. I don't mind residue in my cup of coffee. I also live in Virginia, if that helps.

Thanks so much for your help!

Brian

1. Cafe du Monde - New Orleans Coffee & Chicory

The Original Cafe Du Monde Coffee Stand was established in 1862 in the New Orleans French Market. The Cafe is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It closes only on Christmas Day and on the day an occasional Hurricane passes too close to New Orleans.

2. I recommend
a visit to Gevalia

Check out the Cafe Glockenspiel, their version of a Salzburg roast. Lovely, instense coffee flavour.

3. Garuda blend from Peet's Coffee of San Francisco
Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 12:36 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
Yum.

Peet's has two stores in Portland, but none in Minneapolis. :-(

Millstone coffee is crap. If you have to settle for Starbucks, get their Gold Coast blend.

13. I'll heartily second Peet's

Ever since I left the Bay Area I spent years (I'm serious) trying to find a substitute. There isn't one. So now I splurge on coffee, shipped out here to the sticks. I just about went ape when, on a visit to Denver, I found that Cost Plus had a special purchase of Peet's coffee. I bought most of their stock and put it in the truck, dragged it back out here. (I'm almost out!!)

Peets. Trust me. If you haven't had it, you can't understand.

5. Eight-o-Clock French Roast
A nice dark roast with no grassy flavor and not too bitter.

Starbucks roasts way too dark for my taste. Even their light coffee is very bitter.

9. Write in vote: Fair Trade Coffee
Not only does it taste good, you'll also get a warm fuzzy feeling inside knowing you've supported farmers i.s.o. corporations:

Fair Trade USA.

You can find both local and online retailers at the Where to buy page.

12. If you want great coffee

Check out Porto Rico Coffee Company in New york (portorico.com) I drink their French-Italian Espresso Roast, but they have just introduced a straight Italian Espresso roast that should meet your needs. It's very reasonably priced, and they ship it just-roasted. Your net price will probably be less than buying good coffee locally. Its probably half the cost of Gevalia, and fresher.

My brother, who had also been spoiled by European coffee, discovered these guys years ago when he lived in the Village.

IMO, Starbucks is the Budweiser of coffees. Plus, it gives me heartburn.

15. There are NO good american coffees, LAVAZZA, the italian
brand is the be-all, end-all. I was simply RUINED by it, when a friend brought me some from europe, so I now have to buy it at the local gourmet stores. It ain't cheap either...

Seek out Lavazza for your coffee enjoyment. And trust me, I've tried ALL OF THEM here in the USA. EVERYTHING. Nothing is as good, clean, smooth and strong as Lavazza.
