Yikes, Mayor Las Vegas: Sever Thumbs of Graffiti Artists...
'Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has suggested that those who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.' http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2005/11/03/national/a123031S08.DTL

1. The phrase "excessive" springs to mind.
With "WTF?!" running a close second.

3. I heard that this AM on the news, was stunned!!
Maybe the Las Vegas oath of office doesn't include that inconvenient part about "upholding the Constitution of the United States" -- which, of course, clearly bans cruel and unusual punishment. Although, it looks like that's becoming more and more of a nuisance for our elected officeholders anyway.

4. las vegas has plenty of money, they could open a taggers park...
of sorts, and let the talent rise; it tends to differentiate between the artists attempting something and the likely little hoods they may be having trouble with

5. That's a great idea.
Could end up being yet another attraction in a city famous for them.

7. Thanks for the link bridgit - interesting article.
We have many problems with it here in Richmond. The LAT article points out the crucial issue that's so hard to convey to taggers - it isn't art when you deface public or private property. It's destruction. I've had to remove it from my house twice and from the building my business is in once. It ain't no fun.

But I cannot condone the idea of physical punishment as an appropriate response to any crime. We are America, not Saudi Arabia. Thank goodness.
